Associate Sexual Health Advisor (progressive post)

We are looking to recruit a motivated, forward‑thinking, and enthusiastic Band 5 Sexual Health Advisor (a progressive post into Band 6 once competencies have been met), to join our team.

East of England Community Health and Care NHS Trust provides Integrated Contraception & Sexual Health (iCaSH) across Bedford, Cambridgeshire, Milton Keynes, Norfolk and Peterborough.

The service delivers care specifically to meet the needs of its diverse population. The Norfolk service is community based with three main clinics in Norwich, Great Yarmouth and Kings Lynn, providing contraception, sexual health and HIV care and treatment.

The successful candidate will join a team of friendly, highly skilled and experienced medical, nursing and allied health professionals, supported by clinic assistants and administrative staff, all delivering a high standard of care to patients at our King’s Lynn Clinic. You will also work alongside the teams in Norwich and Great Yarmouth, and must be prepared to travel.

Working Pattern: Monday to Friday, including evenings until 20:00.


Main duties of the job

Job Purpose: To work with the support of the Sexual Health Advisors to manage a case load of patients within the service which will include consultations both face to face and over the telephone.

* Provide advice, information, education, treatment and counselling to patients diagnosed with a sexually transmitted infection such as chlamydia, gonorrhoea, herpes, HIV, syphilis and hepatitis.
* Participate in the management of the results of tests undertaken within the service and carry out partner notification, ensuring the attendance and treatment of contacts, with support of the Sexual Health Advisor.
* Provide a vaccination and recall programme for all eligible patients in relation to Sexual Health (where appropriately trained).
* Safeguard and promote the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults.
* Provide a safe environment whereby patients can discuss their concerns and ask questions.
* Under supervision and with support from the Sexual Health Advisors, provide information and health education for patients diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections, providing support and onward referral and/or signposting as required.
* Take sexual histories from patients where appropriate and refer on to relevant individuals in the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Provide pre‑HIV test discussion for high‑risk patients where appropriate.
* Supply treatments and/or vaccinations to patients as prescribed after appropriate training and competency sign‑off.
* Perform phlebotomy as required in accordance with Trust and Departmental guidelines or undertake phlebotomy training.
* Maintain accurate patient records, ensuring all entries are dated, signed and designation recorded in accordance with the Trust's policies and procedures. Participate in submission of clinical data as required, to enable accurate reporting to meet internal local, national and commissioned requirements.
* Work alongside the HIV specialist team, providing clinician and patient support (where commissioned).
* Support the management of patient complaints, concerns and incidents as necessary and ensure the correct procedures are followed under guidance from the Clinical Nurse Manager and Sexual Health Advisors.
* Ensure any risks or incidents are reported promptly, accurately and via the Trust electronic incident reporting system.
* Be involved in any quality assurance initiatives within the clinic and ensure that all actions are carried out within the Trust's policies and procedures.
* Continue professional development and training by attendance and contribution at relevant clinic/Trust/ regional/ national meetings, seminars, workshops and conferences, sharing knowledge gained, at clinic level.
* Be aware of the ethical, professional and legal frameworks that underpin practice.
* Attend departmental and Sexual Health Advisor team meetings.
* Work within the competency framework and agreed timescales for the progressive training post of Associate Sexual Health Advisor.
* Work within the Society of Sexual Health Advisors (SSHA) guidance.
* Contribute to the financial delivery of the department objectives; support with stock control as required.
* Maintain own professional development and participate in appraisal and KSF process.
* Participate in Clinical Audit, service development and appropriate research projects with support from the Sexual Health Advisors.
* Observe and maintain strict confidentiality with regards to any patient/family/staff/records and information in line with the Data Protection Act and Trust Information Governance policies.
* Adhere to Trust risk assessment, risk management, infection prevention, and control policies and procedures.
* If registered with the Nursing and Midwifery Council, maintain professional registration and revalidation.
* Undertake mandatory training and any other training relevant to the role as required by East of England Community Health and Care NHS Trust.
* Participate in clinical and safeguarding audits as required.
* Provide patients and their families/carers with information on standards they should expect from the team.
* Participate in clinical and management supervision on a regular basis.
* Participate in relevant emergency preparedness process for their team.
* Safeguard children and adults at risk of abuse or neglect – develop and maintain safeguarding people competencies in line with local safeguarding partnership practice.

Person Specification


Qualifications and Training

* Registered Nurse or Midwife (NMC)
* Degree level education, ideally within health or equivalent experience
* Post registration specialist course in sexual health or sexual health advising
* Teaching qualification (Mentor Preparation Programme) or willingness to work towards


Experience

* Experience in health care, ideally sexual health or health coaching.
* NMC registration clinical experience


Skills

* Competent in phlebotomy (or a willingness to undertake training)
* Computer / IT literate and diligent and efficient record‑keeping and audit skills, with attention to detail
* Excellent organisational skills and ability to work autonomously but as part of a multidisciplinary team
* Has a proven ability to work in a sexual health context with adults and young people
* Demonstrates skill in teaching and supervision of students and carers
