999 Telephone Triage Nurse / Paramedic – Emergency Operations Centre

Overview
South East Coast Ambulance Service NHS Foundation Trust invites experienced and compassionate clinicians to join the Emergency Operations Centre (EOC) clinical team. This is an exciting opportunity to work at the heart of our “virtual care” model – providing remote clinical assessment, triage and advice to ensure patients get the right care at the right time.
The post offers a development pathway for Band 5 Adult Nurses ready to progress to Band 6, with full training and ongoing support, as well as for established Band 6 paramedics and nurses.
If you are successfully shortlisted, you will be invited to attend an online clinical assessment on Wednesday 29th April 2026. If successful you will then be invited to a face‑to‑face interview on Wednesday 6th May 2026.
Key Responsibilities
* Provide remote clinical assessments, onward referrals or home‑management advice using clinical decision support software and other IT systems for patients presenting to the 999 service.
* Support and coach Emergency Medical Advisors (EMAs) and dispatch teams within the EOC (ambulance resource dispatch teams).
* Clinically assess, prioritise and manage incidents to ensure patient safety and appropriate allocation of resources.
* Communicate effectively with patients, carers, colleagues and other healthcare professionals, using negotiation skills as required to coordinate the best care and facilitate referrals as appropriate.
* Act as a point of clinical leadership and decision‑making within the EOC, including safeguarding and capacity/consent decisions.

Shift Patterns
Due to 24/7 shift patterns, including nights, applicants must live within approximately 45–60 minutes’ commuting distance. Applications outside this distance will not be progressed. The role requires, and operates 365 days per year, 24 hours per day. Unsocial hours are payable in addition to the salary quoted, dependent on the working pattern. You must read the attached rota requirements to ensure you can meet them.
Employment Terms
* Permanent full‑time contracts.
* Permanent part‑time contracts (minimum of 15 hours per week).
Training Commitment
* 8.5 weeks full‑time NHS Pathways 999.
* 2 weeks NHSP Training.
* 1 week CAD training (all Monday‑Friday).
* 2 weeks EMA mentoring (shift work).
* 1 week NHSP clinician training (Monday‑Friday).
* 2 weeks mentoring (shift work).
The training and mentoring are full time (37.5 hours per week) whether you are applying for a full‑time or part‑time position. You will be required to attend the full 8 weeks of training – no annual leave or days off will be agreed during this time. Failure to attend will result in your employment with the Trust being terminated.
During your mentoring period you must remain flexible as shifts cannot be planned ahead. Due to licence requirements, you must pass all assessments during training. If unsuccessful at the resit, your employment will be terminated immediately.
