Position summary: As a Materials Engineering Apprentice, you’ll work with world-class scientists and engineers to make sure the materials we use are as innovative and safe as possible. Joining our central Engineering, Technology & Safety function, which supports all our divisions, you’ll build on your studies developing your knowledge of different materials and their uses. All while gaining experience in failure investigation studies, research and development, process control, manufacturing support, supplier management and laboratory-related improvement activities. Rolls-Royce designs, builds and services the world’s most vital technologies, providing critical power to customers where safety and reliability are paramount. What you’ll be doing: Across four years, you’ll complete a series of placements in both materials and manufacturing. You’ll support the various processes involved in designing and manufacturing a component, such as additive layer manufacturing, investment casting, welding, heat treatments, application of coatings, laser processes and chemical processing. You’ll also work on a variety of laboratory equipment, from initial microscopic component preparation through to scanning electron microscopes. This practical experience will be supported by formal learning as you undertake a degree in a Materials discipline. Across it all, you’ll develop a broad overview of this area as you will split your time between offices, laboratories, manufacturing sites and university, providing a mix of hands-on and theoretical experience. What you’ll be doing: As Materials Engineering is a broad discipline, you could be involved in failure investigation, capability acquisition, manufacturing support, materials application, specifications and data and supplier management. Depending on your placements, you could be: Helping our suppliers deliver products and materials within specification Statistically analysing and modelling material properties to help Design Engineers understand how they behave in extreme environments Conducting forensic failure investigations by carrying out metallurgical analysis into a product or material to understand how its performance can be improved and higher product safety can be achieved Mapping out various technical processes and improving them to reduce cost and enhance delivery times Testing materials to understand their properties. Who we’re looking for: Five GCSEs which must include a minimum of Maths at grade 6/B, English Language at grade 4/C and Science (triple, double or single award excluding single Biology) at grade 4/C plus 2 others at grade 4/C. 112 UCAS points (obtained or predicted) from either: 3 A-Levels to include Maths at a grade C minimum and a further STEM subject at grade C minimum A BTEC in an Engineering discipline which must include a distinction in Further Maths or have a Maths A-Level in addition at a minimum grade C If you have equivalent qualifications, please contact us.
