MAIN PURPOSE OF THE ROLE:

As an Assistant Manager at it will be your responsibility for leading and developing a team approach to the delivery of a high quality service to learners. You will support the Education Manager in overseeing the performance of the site and, as part of the senior management team you will be responsible for maximising contract performance, developing curriculum, delivering quality provision and exceeding the expectations of partners and learners in line with the company ethos of ‘Improving Peoples Lives’. You will be expected to deputise for the Education Manager in their absence and on other occasions as appropriate.


KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

* You will be accountable to the Education Manager for the effective management of the curriculum and to take the establishment lead for quality assurance and improvement within your curriculum area.
* The management team has responsibility for day to day operation of Education Department. This includes relates specifically to management of learners, particularly their induction, allocation to classes and conduct within the department.
* You will maintain and develop positive internal and external partnerships for the benefit of prisoners and attend meetings as required by the Education Manager, cascading information as required.
* Developing and encouraging an innovative and problem-solving approach to the work of the tutors in order to raise standards and meet challenging targets in line with performance indicators relating to recruitment, retention, achievement and student satisfaction.
* You will support the Education Manager to agree and set targets with staff members to ensure both contractual obligations are met and exceeded and monitor these using our appraisal and professional development procedures.
* Managing teaching and support staff using the full range of HR strategies in order to maximise student success and the efficiency of the provision.
* Supervising staff to ensure their suitability via application of probationary, appraisal and professional development procedures.
* Induct new teaching staff into the department, providing a mentoring role.
* Help develop and promote a standardised curriculum in line with the needs of the prison population and the needs of employers, which may include the effective delivery of Functional Skills, personal and social development and work-based programmes; meeting both Ofsted and Ministry of Justice requirements.
* Working with Awarding Bodies to deliver appropriate qualifications within their quality standards.
* Monitor and coordinate the IQA and EQA schedule, carry out the IQA role where required and support teams.
* Assisting the Manager in the preparation of annual self assessment report, Quality Improvement Plan and budget.
* Ensure that the Quality Cycle is effectively driven through the department.
* Working with the leadership team to plan and implement the annual lesson and blended learning observation cycle with fellow observers, coordinate deep dives and learning walks, notifying staff; production of the report and action plan and feedback to staff.
* Undertake quality assurance on quality of teaching, neurodiversity and reading processes.
* Coach and support teachers to develop and improve in their teaching practice, ensuring that resulting teaching and learning action plans are achieved and effective.
* Coordinate and deliver local CPD resulting from deep dives, learning walks and trends from lesson observations, probationary reviews and Great Conversations.
* Update the quality toolkit on a regular basis, submitting centrally monthly, and using the tool to report upwards and share relevant information on the quality cycle within the establishment.
* Promoting the inclusion and acceptance of all learners, celebrating diversity and ensuring the implementation of equal opportunities.
* Maintain professional standards and expertise by undertaking relevant professional development.
* You will be required to deliver teaching sessions as required.
* The Assistant manager will deputise in the absence of the Education Manager, and may have responsibility for a specific site in multi-site establishments dealing with issues that arise on a day to day basis.
* Complying with the security requirements of HM Prison Services at all times.
* Contractual KPIs for success and performance to be met.
* There may be the requirement to support with other duties or take on additional responsibilities in line with your role, as and when required to support your line manager.
* Prison based roles are 100% site based, with the expectation of prisoner face to face contact


PERSON SPECIFICATION

Education, training and qualifications

* Level 5 or above Teaching Qualification
* Level 4 Award in Internal Quality Assurance or be willing to work towards
* Level 5 Operations or Departmental Manager Qualification
* Level 3 English and Maths

Skills, knowledge and abilities

* Evidence of continuous professional development together with the ability to develop and manage an achievement-focussed team.
* A creative and flexible approach towards achieving objectives and deadlines.
* Persuasive and supportive leadership and staff management skills.
* The ability to identify and implement continuous improvements to the curriculum in line with the needs and demands of learners and employers.
* An innovative approach and proactive style together with highly developed communication skills and the natural ability to influence others.
* A commitment to the Reduction of Re-Offending through Education and Skills.
* Clear understanding of the OFSTED framework (EIF) with the ability to meet all standards.

Experience

* Significant teaching experience
* Successful experience of managing curriculum development and change, quality systems, processes and the performance of teaching staff in ways which have improved learner outcomes.
