This role is the General ICU Matron – a co‑lead position for the 40‑bed Adult General Intensive Care Unit and Surgical High Dependency Unit. The matron will lead a multidisciplinary team, drive high‑quality, patient‑centred care, and collaborate closely with critical care colleagues and Trust leadership.</p><h3>Key Responsibilities</h3><p>The matron will have overarching responsibility for:</p><ul><li>Leading and developing the ICU and SHDU services</li><li>Managing a budget of £13 million</li><li>Coordinating safe, high‑quality care and improving the patient experience</li><li>Overseeing day‑to‑day operations of the 70‑bed adult critical care footprint</li><li>Staff scheduling, recruitment, and professional development</li><li>Strategic planning and service redesign projects</li><li>Representing the Trust in external and internal stakeholder engagement</li><li>Maintaining a visible presence to support staff, patients, and visitors</li></ul><p>Hours: predominantly Monday to Friday with weekend working and on‑call duties for duty matron and staffing hub roles.</p><h3>Qualifications, Knowledge and Experience</h3><p>Applicants must meet the following essential criteria:</p><ul><li>Registered nurse at 1st level on NMC or HCPC register</li><li>First degree or equivalent; Masters or equivalent experience</li><li>Specialist qualification and leadership training</li><li>Management training</li><li>Extensive knowledge of NHS national and local agenda</li><li>Extensive acute clinical leadership or management experience</li><li>Evidence of advanced leadership qualities</li><li>Formal and informal teaching experience</li><li>Staff and resource management experience</li></ul><h3>Trust Values and Behaviours</h3><ul><li>Patients First</li><li>Always Improving</li><li>Working Together</li></ul><h3>Workplace Culture</h3><p>UHS values flexibility, diversity, and inclusion, supporting a balance between personal and professional life.
