Our client offers a unique opportunity to join a newly launched deep tech venture at the intersection of computational science and financial services as the fourth founding team member. Backed by strong institutional investors, the company is already deploying solutions to institutional clients. As a Founding Engineer, you will hold a critical seat at the table, owning the technical roadmap and building the foundation of a high-stakes, high-performance platform. This role is designed to evolve into the CTO position as the engineering function scales throughout 2026.
Key Responsibilities
* Technical Strategy & Roadmap: Own the end-to-end technical roadmap, synthesising stakeholder requirements into executable architectural designs.
* Platform Development: Build and maintain customer-facing APIs and distributed systems for major financial institutions, prioritising fault tolerance and recoverability.
* Architectural Evolution: Analyse existing environments to define and execute the transition from current state to a scalable, high-availability target state.
* Team Leadership: Hire, mentor, and manage a high-performing engineering team as the company grows through upcoming funding rounds.
* Stakeholder Engagement: Act as the technical authority in discussions with institutional clients, explaining complex architectural decisions with clarity and confidence.
Required Skills and Qualifications
* Proven experience as a founding engineer or early hire in a startup of fewer than 100 people.
* Expert‑level Python proficiency combined with strong systems programming experience (C, C++, Go, or Rust).
* Deep expertise in Unix/Linux environments and cloud‑native architecture (AWS, Kubernetes, Docker).
* Experience building distributed systems, integration middleware, and secure REST APIs (OAuth 2, SAML).
* A 'zero-to-one' builder mindset with a track record of delivering under resource constraints and commercial pressure.
Nice‑to‑Have Qualifications
* Experience within fintech, trading technology, or high-performance computational science.
* Prior experience as a Technical Co‑founder or VP of Engineering.
* Knowledge of relational database internals (Oracle, DB2) and NoSQL solutions (MongoDB).
