The Head of Health, Safety & Wellbeing (HSW) will provide strategic leadership and operational oversight of HSW across the Build subdivision. This senior leadership role offers the opportunity to shape and influence a growing build business, embedding a strong, consistent, and high‑performing HSW culture across a diverse portfolio of construction projects.
The role requires regular travel to project sites and offices across the United Kingdom. We are seeking a credible, engaging, and motivated senior HSW leader with extensive experience across construction and build environments.
Tasks
* Ensure the implementation of company Health, Safety and Wellbeing (HSW) requirements across the Build subdivision, ensuring alignment with company objectives, industry best practice, and applicable legislation and standards, including ISO 45001, ISO 45003 (psychosocial risk management), the CDM Regulations 2015, the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005, and the Fire Safety Act 2021.
* Act as the senior HSW advisor to the Managing Directors for Build, providing strategic advice aligned to the risk profile of current and future build activities.
* Report to the UK HSW Director, ensuring alignment with company‑wide HSW strategy, standards, and performance expectations.
* Monitor, evaluate, and report on HSW performance across business units, project sites, and the supply chain.
* Use data, KPIs, trend analysis, and leading indicators to drive continuous improvement, mitigate harm, and provide clear insights and recommendations to senior leadership.
* Establish and oversee HSW assurance processes, including audits, inspections, performance reviews, and governance forums.
* Lead continuous improvement in HSW performance, engagement, assurance, and reporting management processes.
* Work collaboratively with senior leadership and operational teams to embed HSW into build planning, design coordination, construction, and handover.
* Ensure HSW is fully integrated into project delivery in line with CDM 2015 requirements, emergency preparedness, and risk management processes.
* Take collective ownership of HSW outcomes alongside Build leadership team.
* Lead, develop, and mentor the Build HSW team, ensuring effective performance, clear accountability, and continuous professional development. Ensure HSW team competence and capacity align with the Build subdivision’s risk profile and delivery model.
* Support and advocate for the Better Together culture programme across the Build subdivision, promoting engagement, positive behaviours, and shared ownership of health, safety, and wellbeing.
* Ensure all project staff receive appropriate HSW training and support the development of Build operational teams through tailored training, mentoring, workshops, and development plans.
* Oversee occupational health and wellbeing arrangements across Build, including health surveillance, fitness for work, and mental health support.
* Work closely with the Head of Occupational Health & Wellbeing to ensure effective programme delivery, reporting, and alignment with company requirements.
* Oversee and support incident investigations, ensuring robust analysis, effective corrective actions, and the sharing and embedding of lessons learned across Build projects.
* Build strong relationships with clients, regulators, contractors, and the supply chain to support compliance, transparency, and continuous improvement.
* Support development, implementation and maintenance of HSW management systems, procedures, and standards across the Build subdivision.
* Ensure systems support compliance, consistency, assurance, and continuous improvement, aligned with internal requirements and external standards.
Required Qualifications
* Health and Safety Degree Qualified (or experience equivalent to a degree with minimum NEBOSH Level 6)
* Extensive HSW experience in the build sector e.g. industrial, commercial, residential etc.
* In‑Depth Knowledge and experience of UK Regulatory and Industry Standards including legislation CDM regulations, ISO 45001 and 45003
* Chartered Member of IOSH or working towards
* Accident Investigation Training
* Team management and development experience
* Demonstration of knowledge and practical application of planning and construction activities.
* Computer literate with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
* Good communication and presentation skills
* Data analysis for Decision Making
