Role: Director of Independent Oversight Job Family: Risk and Assurance Senior Leadership Location: RG7 4PR, Aldermaston is located between Reading and Basingstoke, with free onsite parking. Working pattern: AWE operates a 9-day working fortnight. The Director of Independent Oversight provides independent assurance of the effectiveness of the Company’s arrangements for meeting its legal and regulatory obligations relating to security, environment, safety and health, and of the Company’s performance in fulfilling those arrangements. Some of the Key Responsibilities · Provides an independent view of AWE’s security arrangements to the company · Provides an independent view of AWE’s environmental, health and safety arrangements to the licensee / authorisee · Acts as a key interface with regulatory representatives including from Office for Nuclear Regulation, Defence Nuclear Safety Regulator, Environment Agency and Defence Nuclear Security Regulator · Leads the provision of peer review and assurance hold point for those submitting safety cases and other proposals · Set the strategy for internal regulation, lead and manage the internal regulation team, ensuring capability to deliver, defining plans and objectives, ensuring high performance and engagement · Leads, coaches and develops leaders by holding them to account and influencing across and outside the company · Own internal regulation delivery and governance policies and procedures, ensuring that the relevant AWE management system documentation meets regulatory and business requirements, and are effective · Provide considered, proportionate independent challenge to the business on nuclear safety matters · Undertake in-depth reviews of the nuclear safety philosophy and analysis for major projects · Provide technical challenge and review of programmes to ensure efficiency and alignment to requirements · Interface with MOD assurance activity as required · Advocate for adherence to AWE’s security and ESH policies throughout the internal and external community · Act as an ambassador for AWE in the wider defence, nuclear or other enterprises Whilst not to be considered a tick list, we’d like you to have experience in some of the following: · SQEP Clearance · Degree or equivalent in a scientific discipline · Understanding and application of health and safety legislative requirements including licence condition compliance arrangements · Experience at a senior level with accountability for assurance issues · Understanding of key issues related to employment of contractors in a regulatory environment · Understanding of AWE technical programmes and customer requirements · Understanding of nuclear licence conditions arrangements and their practical application · Acting as a company ambassador at senior levels of regulators, customer and other operators · Strong influencer and collaborative worker who can maintain independence of thought · Business acumen to provide strategic and tactical insight and thinking depending on the needs of the business · Ability to maintain independence All candidates must be willing and able to obtain and maintain the correct security clearance for this role.
