Join to apply for the Medical Examiner role at Norfolk and Norwich University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust
The Medical Examiner Service at NNUH is seeking to recruit Medical Examiners. This opportunity is open to senior medical personnel, including Consultants and GPs.
Medical Examiners are senior clinicians trained in clinical and legal aspects of death certification. The role involves four Programmed Activity (PA) sessions of four hours each, which can be allocated flexibly to support service delivery. Candidates should specify their preferred number of PAs in their application, to be discussed during interviews. The successful candidate will work on a fixed roster at the NNUH Medical Examiner Service offices, expected to work 42 sessions annually, with flexibility during high-demand periods.
Responsibilities include:
1. Scrutinising case notes of all deceased patients not investigated by HM Coroner, including deaths in primary and secondary care.
2. Liaising with clinical teams to agree on the cause of death for the Medical Certificate of Cause of Death (MCCD).
3. Discussing the cause of death with next-of-kin in a sensitive manner and escalating concerns as needed.
4. Collaborating with Medical Examiner Officers to address clinical care concerns, contributing to governance and Learning from Deaths processes.
5. Making referrals to HM Coroner and acting as a medical resource for the Coroner.
6. Supporting training of resident doctors in completing MCCDs and providing feedback on certification accuracy.
The NNUH Medical Examiner Service has been reviewing inpatient deaths since 2019 and became statutory in September 2024, now covering community deaths as well. The service reviews approximately 6,500 deaths annually and maintains close relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
