Estimating Design Engineer (Sheet Metal)

Our client is a well-established and highly regarded sheet metal fabrication business, supplying high-quality engineered components across a range of industries. Due to continued growth, they are seeking an Estimating Design Engineer to strengthen their office-based engineering team.
This role is ideal for a technically minded estimator with strong CAD skills and hands-on experience within the sheet metal fabrication industry, who thrives on accuracy, cost control, and translating customer requirements into commercially viable quotations.
The Role
As an Estimating Design Engineer, your primary focus will be estimating and quotation preparation, supported by CAD design and technical evaluation. Key responsibilities include:
Preparing accurate and competitive quotations, costings, and material estimates for sheet metal components and fabrications
Reviewing customer drawings, specifications, and RFQs to assess manufacturability, material usage, and production methods
Producing and amending 2D and 3D CAD models and drawings to support quoting and production requirements
Creating BOMs, routings, and job data within the company ERP/MRP system
Liaising closely with sales, production, purchasing, and engineering teams to ensure quotations are technically sound and commercially viable
Applying strong knowledge of sheet metal processes including laser cutting, punching, folding, welding, fabrication, and finishing
Providing technical input to support value engineering, alternative materials, and cost-saving opportunities
Assisting with continuous improvement initiatives to enhance estimating accuracy and workflow efficiency This position plays a critical role in ensuring accurate pricing, production readiness, and smooth project handover from quote to manufacture.

To succeed in this role, you will have:
Proven experience as an Estimating Design Engineer, Estimator, CAD / Quoting Engineer, or similar role within the sheet metal fabrication industry
Strong understanding of sheet metal manufacturing processes and production workflows
Proficiency in 2D & 3D CAD software (Radan, SolidWorks, or similar)
Experience working with ERP/MRP systems for estimating and job creation
Excellent ability to interpret technical drawings and specifications
Strong commercial awareness with a high level of accuracy and attention to detail
Good communication and organisational skills
Solid knowledge of materials including mild steel, stainless steel, aluminium, and associated alloys Apply Now
