Overview
To support registered staff in the direct and indirect care of patients undergoing endoscopic procedures, such as gastroscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy, colonoscopy, bronchoscopy, ERCP and urology clinics. The post holder will undertake additional clinical activities to that of the Band 3 Endoscopy Assistant and will contribute to the development of unregistered staff.
There will be a variety of shifts, some evenings and Saturday working, to meet Trust and Government targets. Following training, you will be expected to participate in the emergency out of hours on-call rota; to participate in the decontamination, traceability and maintenance of endoscopes and other specialised equipment used in endoscopic and non-endoscopic procedures.
Responsibilities
* Undertake an agreed range of clinical activities in line with defined competencies specific to the specialism of the clinical area including but not limited to:
* Measure and record blood glucose monitoring via capillary blood.
* Record and document clinical observations and report as appropriate to senior nurse.
* Assist with upper and lower GI endoscopic procedures.
* Assist with bronchoscopy.
* Assist with urology clinics.
* Setting up, cleaning and decontamination of equipment.
* Identify endoscopes required each day for use within the Endoscopy unit, remote areas and after hours use and prepare as per local and BSG guidelines.
* Clean and decontaminate endoscopic equipment in accordance with local and national guidelines and protocols.
* Maintain accurate traceability records of all endoscopes and endoscopic accessories and ancillaries.
Standards and Compliance
* Be aware of, and demonstrate adherence to, the Trust's policy on infection control and waste disposal.
* Adhere to the recommendations for the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) and risk assessments appropriate to the clinical area.
* Adhere to the principles of universal precautions in all aspects of patient care and when handling endoscopic equipment.
* Participate in any Endoscopy Training programmes.
* Ensure the significance of data relating to patient's condition and progress is interpreted and acted on.
* Ensure safe practice to minimize the risk of infection to patients and staff.
* Ensure that protective clothing is worn correctly as required.

* Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients, relatives, and colleagues, referring to senior staff as necessary.
* Answer the telephone and relay messages accurately, courteously, and competently.
* Welcome patients and visitors in a professional, friendly, and helpful manner.
* Work effectively as a member of the endoscopy team, offering support to colleagues and requesting assistance as necessary.
* Demonstrates written communication through the ability to record accurate, succinct, clear, and legible documentation.
* Contribute to the induction, training, and development of staff within the unit.

* Ensure all care is individualised and delivered with the informed consent of the patient.
* Maintain confidentiality of patient information at all times.
Administrative
* Maintain accurate patient records.
* Report repairs/maintenance issues appropriately.
* Demonstrate insight into own development needs and access development through an agreed Personal Development Plan.
* Attend mandatory training, and other in-service training, as necessary.
* Report deficiencies in stock levels to the Nurse in Charge and assist in the ordering of supplies.
