Overview
The apprenticeship in dental nursing is an 18-month government funded course: City & Guilds Level 3 Extended Diploma in Dental Nursing. The job entails assisting the dentist, sterilising equipment, reception and any other ad hoc duties as may be required. Provide efficient and reliable chair-side support to Practice Clinicians. The role may involve working in other areas of the practice such as reception and dealing with patient queries, answering the phone, taking payments and booking appointments.
Responsibilities
* Provide efficient and reliable chair-side support to Practice Clinicians.
* Assist the dentist and prepare records, images, equipment and materials for clinical assessment.
* Sterilise equipment and manage decontamination and infection control procedures according to current guidelines.
* Prepare and maintain the clinical environment including the instruments and equipment; process and manage dental radiographs and images.
* Work in other areas of the practice as required, including Reception, dealing with patient queries, answering the phone, taking payments and booking appointments.
* Record an accurate and contemporaneous patient history; accurately record dental charting and an oral health assessment; maintain patient records in accordance with legal requirements and best practice.
* Identify, assess and manage medical emergencies; provide patient-centred care and reassurance; monitor patient anxiety and provide appropriate behavioural support.
* Obtain valid consent from patients, explain relevant factors, and consider legal requirements within the scope of practice.
* Contribute to special investigations and diagnostic procedures as required; undertake orthodontic assessment where appropriate.
* Provide comprehensive, personalised preventive advice and promote self-care to improve oral health.
* Communicate effectively with patients, carers, the public and colleagues, including where English is not the first language, using interpreters when needed.
* Record, maintain and safeguard accurate patient records and data.
* Support smooth team functioning and collaborate with colleagues to deliver high-quality dental care.
* Identify and explain risks within the clinical environment and manage them safely and effectively.
* Comply with systems and processes to support safe patient care and adherence to clinical governance and health and safety requirements.
* Demonstrate personal accountability, professional development, and ongoing reflection; maintain professional knowledge and competence.
Qualifications and requirements
* This qualification is a Level 3 Advanced Apprenticeship accredited by City & Guilds and is delivered nationwide through blended interactive E-Learning.
* On achievement the apprentice will be awarded a Diploma in Dental Nursing Level 3. Functional Skills English & Maths Level 2 qualifications unless exempt.
* GCSE English (grade 4) and Maths (grade 4) or equivalent requirements.
* Hours: Monday to Friday, 8:30am-5:30pm; may require occasional later evening shifts. 40 hours per week.
* Start date: Wednesday 19 November 2025; Duration: 1 year 6 months.
* Location: Beauchamp House, Romsey, Hampshire (centralised location in the Romsey community).
* Training pathway may lead to roles such as team manager, dental practice manager, dental therapist, dental hygienist, or orthodontic therapist with additional training.
