Brief Description
Working in all weathers on the frontline, you’ll carry out everything from maintenance to faulting. You’ll develop your management skills by deputising for the Team Leader and help keep our nation moving every day. A daily upkeep of the rail network is essential, and you’ll work outdoors in a team to support maintenance that keeps the railway running safely and smoothly for passengers and freight users. We prioritise transferrable skills and provide training to help you work safely and competently on the network. The role offers a potential career path into leadership and broader opportunities within the company.
The Role (External)
Technicians provide the essential link between the Team Leader and the team’s Operatives. You’ll specialise in Track: maintaining, inspecting and repairing the track network (Permanent Way or P-Way) to keep the railway safe and efficient. This is a very manual role, working with rails, sleepers and ballast and associated drainage and structures. You will work outside in all conditions, day and night, and may need to transport equipment across challenging terrain. You will be safety-focused, follow rules, and work as part of a team near moving trains at high speed.
You matter to your team. You’ll be able to lead the team when required, ensure the team has the right competencies to meet safety standards, and model safe working behaviours. You’ll be confident to challenge risks so everyone gets home safe every day. Your growth is valued—today’s Technicians can become tomorrow’s Team Leaders, with training provided to develop both technical and non-technical skills.
Your Skills Matter. You don’t necessarily need rail experience, but you should demonstrate transferrable skills aligned with the following requirements.
* Leadership – able to lead, motivate and direct a team for safe and efficient work delivery.
* Effective communicator – strong communication skills to deliver clear instructions.
* Technical skills – knowledge and experience of inspection, faulting, maintenance and renewal techniques in the applicable discipline.
* Safety – model safe behaviours, implement safe systems of work and challenge unsafe situations.
* Problem solver – persistent in finding safe and effective solutions, keeping up to date with standards and procedures.
* Willingness to learn – continuous development of skills and competencies.
* Relevant qualification – ideally NVQ Level 1 or 2 in the discipline or equivalent experience.
It matters that this is the right role for you. Here’s additional information which might help you:
* Shifts – changing shift pattern including days, nights and weekends.
* Outdoor working – comfortable working in different weather conditions.
* Safe working – offers of employment are subject to drug and alcohol testing and relevant medical assessment. External candidates may require BPSS pre-employment checks.
* Driving – a category B driving licence is required to drive Network Rail vehicles.
* Commute – be within a 60-minute commute of the location you’re applying for.
