Job Description
Mechanical Design Engineer
West Northamptonshire
Up to £47,000 DOE
Full-time, Permanent
Do you have a passion for mechanical design and a fascination with how things move, lift, and perform?
We're looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer who thrives on turning bold creative visions into engineered reality. Join a team where technical precision meets world-class spectacle - and where no two projects are ever the same.
Whether it's designing a custom truss adaptor for a headline tour or helping create the structural backbone of an immersive installation, you'll play a vital role in shaping unforgettable moments.
What You'll Be Doing -
* Design that Moves the World:
Craft detailed 2D and 3D CAD drawings using AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor, including fabrication-ready designs for bespoke mechanical and structural components.
* Engineering Meets Creativity:
Collaborate with production managers, show designers, and structural supervisors to bring ambitious concepts to life—safely, efficiently, and impressively.
* From Screen to Stage:
Work closely with fabrication teams and on-site crews to ensure your designs are practical, buildable, and ready for the rigours of touring and installation.
* Engineering with Confidence:
Apply your knowledge of mechanical systems, safety standards (LOLER, PUWER, BS/EN), and load calculations to ensure your designs are safe, compliant, and performance-ready.
* Be Where the Action Is:
Conduct site surveys, liaise with crews, and occasionally join on-site installations to see your work in action—literally.
What You Bring to the Stage
* A degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Design Engineering.
* Hands-on experience designing mechanical systems—preferably involving lifting, structural steel, or live events.
* High proficiency with AutoCAD and Autodesk Inventor (2D & 3D).
* A solid grasp of fabrication techniques, welding, and assembly methods.
* Strong communication skills, capable of bridging technical and creative teams.
* Ability to manage multiple fast-moving projects and meet production deadlines.
* Full UK driving licence (essential for site work).
Even Better If You Have…
* Practical experience with hoists, motors, steelwork, or stage machinery.
* Worked with fabrication shops or scenic engineering teams.
* Been part of load-ins, installations, or international tours.
* A working knowledge of temporary structures and load-bearing systems in live event settings.
What's In It for You
* A competitive salary package + generous pension scheme.
* Direct involvement in internationally acclaimed productions.
* A collaborative, hands-on environment where no idea is too big.
* Genuine opportunities for career development within a fast-growing, innovative team.
* The satisfaction of watching your engineering come alive on stage, screen, or set.
