Defra group Commercial is looking to appoint an Assistant Commercial Officer to the Monitoring And Related Services (MARS) commercial team within our Environmental Goods and Services spend category. Defra Group Commercial (DGC), part of Defra, the UK government department responsible for the rural economy, environment, and animal and plant health, provides a commercial service to organizations within the Defra Network.
The role involves assisting customers and commercial teams to deliver value effectively and innovatively, supporting the achievement of customer outcomes and Spending Review targets. Responsibilities include awarding and monitoring supplier contracts in line with Defra’s policies, ensuring value for money, and applying Commercial DNA principles.
The post requires a proactive approach to customer service, reviewing requests from internal customers, advising on commercial policies, and providing guidance on commercial issues and governance. Engagement with colleagues across the country is essential to build the Commercial network within Defra and beyond.
The Environmental Goods and Services category manages a high volume of scientifically focused agreements, mainly low- to medium-value projects. The role is pivotal in streamlining procurement processes and enhancing customer service.
The Assistant Commercial Officer will report to a Senior Category / Commercial Officer and will support project delivery, procurement, and contract management, contributing to business efficiency and environmental goals.
You will be responsible for explaining Commercial guidance to operational teams, keeping up-to-date with legislation and best practices, maintaining effective relationships, supporting results delivery, managing resources, developing category plans, providing administrative support, and managing contracts to ensure sustainable impacts.
The post-holder will be accountable for:
* Providing day-to-day advice on commercial issues and governance, identifying savings opportunities.
* Supporting complex procurements, including research, market engagement, tender document preparation, and supplier queries.
* Managing commercial and contractual interactions with suppliers, supporting the development of supplier relationships.
* Maintaining a customer focus, participating in stakeholder meetings, and supporting continuous professional development.
