Head of Midwifery, Gynaecology and Sexual Health | Walsall Healthcare NHS Trust Role summary: The post holder works within a multidisciplinary team, providing professional midwifery and nursing leadership, and supporting the Director of Midwifery with strategic direction for maternity and women’s services.
Key responsibilities include:
Design, develop and implement maternity and related services aligned with national recommendations.
Provide direct line management to band 8a and designated band 7 nursing and midwifery senior staff.
Function as the visible clinical midwifery/nurse leader, setting standards of care and professionalism.
Lead operational delivery, ensuring safe and effective clinical practice and meeting quality and environmental standards.
Manage resources, budgets, and utilisation; hold managerial accountability for delivered services.
Participate in Trust investigations, contribute to the healthcare governance agenda, and embed clinical governance.
Support development of maternity research strategy and long‑term strategic plans in line with national policy.
Ensure compliance with the NMC Code, revalidation, and evidence‑based standards.
Lead infection prevention, patient experience and inclusive service user feedback mechanisms.
Develop learning environment, training plans, and workforce development for nursing and midwifery staff.
Represent the Trust, collaborate with partner organisations, and deputise for the Director of Midwifery when required.
Operational responsibilities: Deliver high‑quality services across acute and community settings, manage staff performance, conduct annual reviews, and oversee recruitment and retention strategies.
Strategic responsibilities: Inform and implement professional agendas, lead innovation, and drive transformational change to improve quality, experience and efficiency.
