Overview
We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Maintenance Person to join our family run Care business. Based mainly at Breck Lodge Care Home with occasional travel to a second site approx. 25 miles away (mileage paid). The successful candidate will be responsible for ensuring the care home is safe, well-maintained, and fully functional to support the comfort, health, and wellbeing of our residents and staff.
This role is essential in helping us maintain a warm, safe, and welcoming environment for elderly residents.
Key Responsibilities:
* Carry out general day-to-day maintenance and repair tasks across the care home, including basic plumbing, joinery, painting and decorating, gardening and grounds work.
* Perform routine inspections of the building, equipment, and systems (heating, fire alarms, emergency lighting, etc.).
* Respond promptly to maintenance requests from staff or residents and complete tasks to a high standard.
* Liaise with external contractors and service providers when required.
* Maintain accurate records of maintenance work, checks, and repairs.
* Ensure the care home complies with health and safety regulations and CQC standards.
* Conduct regular checks on safety equipment (e.g., fire extinguishers, smoke detectors, call bell systems).
* Assist in setting up or moving furniture and equipment.
* Support emergency repairs and be on-call when necessary.
* Keep the grounds tidy, including light gardening and waste disposal.
* Report any issues that could affect the safety or security of the residents or premises.
Person Specification:
Essential:
* Proven experience in a maintenance or handyman role.
* Basic knowledge of plumbing, electrics, carpentry, and general DIY.
* Strong understanding of health and safety practices.
* Ability to work independently and manage time effectively.
* Good communication and interpersonal skills.
* Respectful and sensitive to the needs of elderly or vulnerable residents.
* Willingness to undergo a DBS check (Disclosure and Barring Service).
Desirable:
* Previous experience in a care home or healthcare setting.
* Relevant trade qualifications or certificates (e.g., PAT testing, Legionella awareness, etc.).
* Knowledge of regulatory requirements in care settings (CQC, Health & Safety Executive).
Working Hours:
Core hours 37.5 hours worked Monday to Friday. May be required to complete emergency calls over weekends, paid as over time.
