About The Role
We’re looking for a General Building Operative to join our Onward Repairs team in a permanent role. The job is to carry out day‑to‑day property repairs and maintenance, ensuring all work meets our standards and performance targets.
You’ll be expected to do high‑quality work at all times and follow all legal and safety requirements.
Responsibilities
You’ll be responsible for delivering high‑quality, cost‑effective repairs that meet our standards and provide real value for money. From planning the work to completing the job, you’ll make sure repairs are carried out efficiently and professionally.
What You’ll Be Doing
* Assess repairs and choose the best, cost‑effective solution.
* Order and organise materials, keeping van stock topped up.
* Communicate clearly with customers, colleagues and stakeholders to deliver great service.
* Plan and manage your workload to keep jobs running smoothly and on time.
* Liaise with customers and colleagues about access, safe work, repair needs and progress updates.
* Complete job updates using a PDA and keep accurate records, including materials used and any follow‑on work.
Health & Safety
* Work safely at all times and follow all health and safety legislation and procedures.
* Show a strong understanding of safe working practices and help promote a positive health and safety culture.
Equipment and Vehicles
* Safely use light machinery, plant and powered hand tools.
* Take responsibility for the safe use and daily checks of any company vehicle you are allocated.
Skills
Essential
* Sound knowledge of building construction, components, building trades (groundworking, flagging, brickwork, roofing and pointing, etc.) and applicable building regulations.
* Experience of working in a customer‑focused service.
* Proven ability to deliver a quality customer‑centred repairs service.
* Experience of working in a target‑driven environment.
* Sound knowledge of health and safety regulations, ACOPS relevant to the post and associated tasks, in line with HASAWA 1974.
Desirable
* Experience within a commercial and domestic property maintenance environment.
* Experience delivering services within the social housing sector.
* Experience using PDA technology (hand‑held/mobile working technology).
Qualifications
Essential
* Minimum of L2 NVQ or equivalent qualification in bricklaying / roofing and/or equivalent relevant experience.
* Appropriate CSCS card.
Desirable
* Relevant health & safety qualifications relating to the sector or construction industry.
* Asbestos awareness training.
* Relevant power tool training.
* Manual handling training.
* Mandatory COSHH & PPE training.
* Access equipment and working‑at‑height training (e.g., mobile work platforms).
