This is an exciting opportunity to work as a Consultant Forensic Psychiatrist in Broadmoor Hospital.

In 2019, we moved into the new hospital, which provides a modern, state-of-the-art, high secure facility for patients from across London and southern England that meets national and local policy requirements. The environment is safe and secure in relation to protection of the public, visitors, staff and patients. It is designed to maximise the delivery of modern clinical care.

We are seeking a forensic psychiatrist who is enthusiastic, is focussed on providing high quality care for patients, has proven clinical and leadership skills and is able to manage highly complex patients in a high secure setting. In recognition of the skills required, the post attracts a pro rata £21678 annual recruitment and retention payment.

There are opportunities for research and engagement in quality improvement projects and for career development.


Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role include; being the Responsible Clinician for patients on one of our ISAT (increased support and assertive treatment) wards, providing clinical leadership to your multidisciplinary team/teams, being a clinical supervisor (training provided), participating in a non resident on call, carrying out assessments of patients referred to the service, liaising with internal and external stakeholders and engaging in quality improvement and audit projects.

The Trust is an established partner and contributor in the development of the evolving North West London Integrated Care System and the Integrated Care Board. The Trust leads the NW London Children and Adolescent Mental Health provider collaborative.

Person Specification


Qualifications and Experience

* Level 3 Child Protection/Safeguarding & Adult Safeguarding Training
* Enhanced CRB clearance
* Full GMC Registration and on the Specialist Register.
* Section 12 Approval
* Training in the full range of effective therapeutic techniques to include Psycho-education, medication, and Psychological Therapies
* Completion of Higher Specialist Training in Psychiatry (or within six months at time of interview)
* Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists or equivalent
* Experience of working in a high secure setting


Teaching (Experience in Teaching)

* Medical students, psychiatric trainees, other NHS Staff and police personnel
* Ability to use a wide range of teaching techniques and audio-visual aids
* Presentation at conferences


Management and Audit

* Participation in Medical Audit
* Management Training
* Management Skills
* Understanding of contracting, finance and activity monitoring


Service Development & IT Skills

* Understanding of leadership
* Experience in data gathering and management
* Basic computer skills, including ability to use email and Internet
* Experience in developing a service component
* Understanding of and experience in needs assessment


Personal Skills

* Ability to travel between sites
* Ability to work within a multi-disciplinary team and engage in multiagency work
* Willingness to comply with hospital security procedures and systems.
* Enthusiasm and commitment to the NHS but able to work constructively with other sectors.
* Capacity to respond positively to the constantly changing NHS environment
