Job Purpose
To make a substantial and positive contribution towards the strategic direction of the school and provide academic leadership and support in Restorative Dentistry. The appointee will play a significant role in delivery of undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Restorative Dentistry and provide leadership to the pre-clinical skills unit. The post holder will be expected to participate fully in the management of the Section of Clinical Dentistry, and to take leadership roles as required.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
* To lead the design, delivery and review of a range of teaching, learning, assessment and feedback activities in Restorative Dentistry, in an environment that promotes scholarly learning for undergraduate and taught postgraduate students. On average there are approximately 90 undergraduate students a year.
* To be responsible for developing creative and innovative approaches to teaching and learning, ensuring that the quality of educational opportunities available to undergraduate students is continually enhanced.
* To participate in the ongoing development and review of undergraduate curricula.
* To provide leadership to the pre-clinical skills unit by working with year and subject leads to develop innovative teaching and assessment.
* To provide effective, timely and appropriate feedback to students to support learning.
* To participate in student mentoring and student elective programmes.
* To take the lead and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate student research and elective projects.
* To engage in scholarship relevant to delivery of dental education and to disseminate outcomes appropriately.
* To undertake senior administrative duties associated with the delivery of teaching, learning and assessment and the academic management of the Dental School and wider School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing as determined by the Head of Section, Director of Dental Education and Head of the Dental School.
* To undertake NHS clinical duties associated with the post at the appropriate non-consultant level.
* To undertake undergraduate teaching activity at Outreach Centres located outside the Dental School & Hospital if required.
Knowledge, Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Knowledge/Qualifications
Essential:
* A1 Registerable Qualification with the General Dental Council of the United Kingdom (GDC).
* A2 Masters degree or Higher Research Degree, or equivalent.
* A3 Hold, or willingness to work towards, a certificate in Academic Practice, or equivalent learning and teaching qualification.
Desirable:
* B1 Membership or Fellowship in Dental Surgery from one of the Royal Surgical Colleges or equivalent.
Skills
Essential:
* C1 Ability to deliver research-informed teaching.
* C2 Excellent administrative and organisational skills.
* C3 Good IT skills including the ability to work in an online environment.
* C4 Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
* C5 Excellent presentation skills.
* C6 Willingness and ability to work as part of a team.
Experience
Essential:
* E1 Minimum of 5 years post qualification with significant clinical experience in Restorative Dentistry.
* E2 Recent experience of delivering undergraduate and postgraduate teaching in Restorative Dentistry (within the last 3 years).
* E3 Recent experience in academic assessment of undergraduate dental students (within the last 3 years).
* E4 Established track-record of quality research or learning, teaching & Scholarship.
* E5 Experience in administration of dental teaching programmes.
* E6 Experience of management processes in an academic environment.
Desirable:
* F1 Experience of mentoring students and/or staff.
* F2 Experience of assessment of postgraduate students.
Terms and Conditions
* Salary will be on the Speciality Doctor Pay Scale £52,812 - £99,975 per annum.
* An honorary clinic contract of appropriate seniority will be arranged by application to the NHS.
* This post is full time and open ended.
