Assistant Ranger Apprentice - Arundel

Summary

Join us on a National Trust apprenticeship designed to support your development and enable you to contribute to combating climate change, protecting historic sites, and promoting the well-being of people and nature. No prior experience is necessary; just enthusiasm and a willingness to learn.

As an Assistant Ranger apprentice, you'll work as part of the ranger team to conserve the environment that makes our countryside unique and help care for our protected landscapes.

This role can lead to an assistant ranger or ranger position and may progress to a Level 4 Countryside Ranger apprenticeship with additional experience.

For more details about our apprenticeship program, please visit: National Trust Jobs :: Apprenticeships.

What it's like to work here

You will work outdoors in all weather conditions as part of our ranger teams, supporting our goal to restore a healthy, beautiful, and natural environment. Your responsibilities include protecting and enhancing the health and wildlife richness of our countryside, preserving its benefits, and helping visitors connect with conservation.

Training combines mandatory week-long college blocks and online learning, with all expenses and travel covered. Opportunities to visit other National Trust locations, including overnight stays, may also be available to broaden your experience.

You will be based at the Slindon Estate in West Sussex, a traditional Sussex estate with mixed broadleaved woodland and downland, including four tenant farms. The estate hosts the Northwood project, one of the Trust's largest woodland restoration initiatives. Work varies seasonally; winter involves chainsaw work in woodland management, while summer focuses on surveys, maintaining infrastructure, and public engagement. Occasionally, work may be conducted at other sites such as Drovers Estate, East Head, Warren Hill, and Sullington Warren.

What you'll be doing

You will work alongside your mentor on tasks specific to your apprenticeship, developing skills and knowledge aligned with the Countryside Worker Level 2 standard. You will attend regular review meetings with your training provider and be responsible for your progression, completing mandatory e-learning, courses, and training.

Who we're looking for

In addition to the qualities listed in the role profile, we are interested if you meet the following criteria by the start date:

* A minimum of 2 GCSEs, including English and Maths at grade E/2 or equivalent (EHCP holders with entry level 3 in English and Maths are also eligible).
* Age 16 or over, having completed Year 11.
* Not in full-time education.
* Right to work in the UK and been resident in the UK for at least three consecutive years prior to starting.
* Not enrolled in another training or education program.
* Ability to travel to the work location.

If you are aged 18 or under and haven't achieved English and Maths at grade C/4, you will be enrolled in Level 2 functional skills as part of your apprenticeship. This is optional for those aged 19 or over, but support will be provided to complete it.

Qualifications or substantial relevant experience in related fields may affect eligibility for government funding, which will be verified during the application process.
