Job Objectives And Responsibilities
* Interpret and make judgment across a wide range of issues, and understand the complexity of pre‑planned maintenance, reactive maintenance, unplanned events/emergencies working in a controlled manner.
* Diagnose and repair faults in engineering and/or electrical and/or plumbing installations, plant and equipment to deal with new situations as they arise and pass on knowledge to others.
* Experience of working in an acute or non‑acute hospital setting is advantageous but not essential.
* Act as Mitie’s first‑line representative and, on occasion, the sole representative Trust wide.
* Carry out planned, breakdown and emergency maintenance of a complete range of mechanical/electrical/building services within the estate.
* Undertake installation type work as part of new or refurbishment projects or plant replacement programmes.
Main Duties
* Maintain and repair the complete range of mechanical and electrical engineering services associated with the Health Care estate – including engineering services, portable equipment, fixed plant, fire alarms, control panels, valves, calorifiers, water storage vessels, pipework and fittings, HVAC, pumps, motors, AHU’s and building management systems.
* Perform PPM (Pre Planned Maintenance) and Reactive Maintenance tasks to a high standard.
* Conduct inspection and testing programmes for installed plant, fixed and mobile/portable equipment.
* Follow engineering and building drawings and specifications to produce satisfactory levels of output with high workmanship standards, fully understanding the relationship between mechanical and electrical systems.
* Determine spares, components or supplies required to undertake and complete repair, routine servicing and new installations.
* Complete all record sheets and paperwork associated with routine duties accurately and promptly, using hand‑held devices.
* Assist in training others engaged in mechanical work.
* Carry out work flexibly, covering work not of the core trade or skill.
* Handle projects requiring special and higher levels of skill, usually with special training.
* Act as Shift Team Manager in their absence, supervising day‑to‑day operational staff across all trades in the absence of Engineering or Building Supervisor.
* Monitor the CAFM system to ensure tasks are assigned within appropriate timescales and potential issues are identified before incurring failure points.
* Perform complex and/or non‑routine working activities.
* Liaise with specialist and non‑technical personnel at all levels in service delivery.
* Conduct planned preventive maintenance inspections and commissioning tests in accordance with legislation and guidance.
* Undertake any other duties appropriate to the grade of this position.
* Work in hazardous areas with all safety measures to prevent danger, avoid injury and prevent damage to equipment.
* Work flexibly to meet departmental needs.
* Observe statutory requirements – health and safety, electricity at work regulations, asbestos, legionella and COSHH regulations.
Person Specification
* Working hours: 12‑hour shifts over a 4‑day pattern (4 x Days, 4 x Off, 4 x Nights, 4 x Off).
* Full UK driving licence.
* Evidence of working within acute health care premises is advantageous but not essential.
* Excellent communication and coordination skills.
* High level of flexibility and cooperation required to maintain service standards.
* High standard of customer care skills, pleasant manner, good communication, numeracy and keyboard skills.
* NVQ Level 3 in Electrical/Mechanical engineering or equivalent.
* IOSH Working Safely qualification.
* Completion of a structured training programme in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering for a minimum of 3 years.
* After sufficient training, inclusive of a range of works beyond the core trade or skill.
* Self‑motivated, focused, driven and energetic.
* Maintains high standards of professionalism and confidentiality.
* Ability to work under pressure and deliver within tight timescales.
* Motivated to pursue personal learning and career development.
* Willingness to undertake further training in line with Mitie FM requirements.
