GMP Recruitment are proud to be in partnership with a long-established and highly reputable UK manufacturer of precision-forged and machined components for the aerospace, defence, and other high-specification sectors. We are currently recruiting on their behalf for an experienced Light Scruff Operator to join their team.
This is a full time, permanent position offering £14 - £16.50 p/h pending experience. During your first 3 to 6 months (probation and training period), you’ll work normal hours, 5 days per week. After that period, you switch to the 9-day fortnight schedule.
Week 1: Work Monday – Friday (5 days)
Week 2: Work Monday –Thursday (4 days)
Working as a Light Scruff Operator you will be responsible for removing minor surface defects, flash, burrs, and scale from forged aerospace components. The role ensures that parts meet required visual and dimensional standards before they move into machining, NDT, or final inspection processes.
Experience in manual surface finishing, de-burring, fettling, grinding, polishing, or similar manufacturing operations is required. If you have experience using hand tools (files, scrapers, grinders, sanders) then this is for you!
Light Scruff Operator main duties:
* Carry out light scruffing, scurfing, grinding, and surface finishing on forged components using hand tools and light machinery.
* Remove flash lines, high spots, oxidation, and superficial surface marks while ensuring material integrity is maintained.
* Follow work instructions, drawings, and specifications to achieve required finish levels.
* Prepare components for subsequent processes such as heat treatment, machining, shot peening, or inspection.
* Conduct visual checks to verify that parts meet quality, dimensional, and cosmetic standards.
Light Scruff Operator required skills and experience:
* Experience in manual surface finishing, de-burring, fettling, grinding, polishing, or similar manufacturing operations.
* Ability to use hand tools (files, scrapers, grinders, sanders).
* Strong attention to detail and ability to meet tight aerospace quality standards.
* Good understanding of workplace health & safety.
