SENIOR PHARMACY TECHNICIAN – Medicines Management (Band 5)
Full‑time, 37.5 hours per week (including late duties). Permanent maternity cover.
Employer: Dorset County Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. Location: Dorchester, Dorset.
Salary: Pro rata per annum (subject to closing date 07/06/2026).
UKVI Sponsorship: Eligible for Skilled Worker route subject to meeting UKVI criteria. Sponsorship offered where eligible.
Responsibilities
The role involves ward‑based activities, providing face‑to‑face patient contact, completing Medicines Reconciliation, and discharge support to specialist ward areas. The pharmacist will also support the dispensary and decentralised hubs with final checking duties and dispensing medicines.
Key duties include:
* Providing Medicines Reconciliation within the 48‑hour target and discharge facilitation for patients highlighted for discharge.
* Prioritising patients within ward areas to minimise missed doses, ensuring critical medications are handled appropriately.
* Managing clinical queries and delegating to appropriate members of the multi‑disciplinary team.
* Working weekends, bank holidays, and late duties on a rotational basis.
Person Specification
Education, Qualifications and Training
* BTEC National Certificate in Pharmacy or NVQ Level 3 in Pharmacy Services (or equivalent).
* GPhC Registration.
* Nationally recognised Accredited Checking Pharmacy Technician qualification.
* Medicines Reconciliation qualification.
Experience
* Recent practical experience in a busy dispensing or ward‑based environment.
* Experience in training and developing staff.
* Experience prioritising patients and managing ward duties.
Skills, Abilities & Knowledge
* Ability to check prescriptions independently.
* Knowledge of legal aspects of technician checking and prescription law.
* Broad understanding of pharmacy practice to support and advise staff.
* Methodical and accurate work style.
* Able to analyse prescriptions, identify problems, and decide on appropriate action.
* Ability to work with minimum supervision and on own initiative.
* Planning and organizing straightforward activities, adjusting plans and priorities.
* Good knowledge of legal requirements for dispensing and supplying medicines, including controlled drugs.
* Flexibility to work within a team, supervise, motivate, and direct a team.
* Flexibility to participate in weekend working, bank holiday rotas and other operational duties.
* Commitment to continuing professional development (CPD).
* Computer literacy and keyboard skills.
Eligibility
