Legal Counsel - Fixed Term Contract
As a Legal Counsel is the bottom line just not doing it for you any more? Are you searching for a job with purpose beyond profit?
Commonwealth War Graves Commission provided pay range
This range is provided by Commonwealth War Graves Commission. Your actual pay will be based on your skills and experience — talk with your recruiter to learn more.
Who we are
The Commonwealth War Graves Commission is an organisation dedicated to honouring and caring for the graves and memorials of servicemembers who died in the two World Wars. The work of the commission is not only out on the field, but in our head office too, which contributes to the meaningful commemoration of those who made the ultimate sacrifice. We look after 1.7 million casualties of the first and second world wars. But what does that mean? It means we work in over 150 countries. Quite some geographical spread, so it’s intellectually fascinating. But it’s also emotionally rewarding; when we say “look after” 1.7 million casualties, we really care. We learn their names and their stories of lives cut short.
To fulfil this mission, we need land, people, equipment, bank accounts. For the legal department, that means we need to ensure our sites are secure in a changing geopolitical landscape; that we need to enter into contracts, large and small around the world; that we need to comply with corporate governance requirements, and we need to give employment advice.
It’s not always straightforward, but that’s okay. The legal team provides this advice in a supportive and collaborative environment. This doesn’t happen by chance – we recruit the right people, and we do all we can to make them feel welcome and able to do their best work.
As there are always contracts to review in-house, we’re looking for someone with commercial contracts experience. We’re also really interested in speaking to people with international employment law expertise (as we may be able to shape a role to encompass largely employment law, as we work toward establishing a framework for this). But otherwise, we’re flexible. Whilst fit is important in any job, it’s crucial here as you’ll be dealing on a weekly basis with things you haven’t come across before, so your listening skills and logical ability are essential, as is your ability to connect with people from different cultures, and also your adoption and role modelling of our CARE Values. You could be advising on a boundary wall in North Africa, a thorny employment matter in Asia, or a SAAS contract at Head Office.
You'll also be advising our registered charity, the Commonwealth War Graves Foundation. We are very happy to speak to people assessing their life choices and thinking of moving from the corporate world.
You’ll get much more than a great legal job – it’s a never-ending history and geography lesson. We consult Commission minutes; pore over blueprints and plans and understand and work in sympathy with the history and the heritage that our organisation was created to commemorate.
Our Strategy to 2039 is positioning us to ensure our longevity and our place in the landscape of global Commemoration. All of this to fulfil a promise made more than a century ago and inscribed in stone at CWGC sites the world over – THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE.
