We are seeking a Senior Peer Support Worker to work across Laurel, Pine and Birch wards at the Redwoods Centre who has personal lived experience of recovery from mental health challenges and having personally utilised inpatient mental health services to work in our multi-disciplinary inpatient teams at the Redwoods Centre.


Peer support workers utilise their own recovery journey to offer hope and belief that recovery is possible and promote choice, self-determination and opportunities and assist the individual to set and achieve their own unique recovery goals.


Life as a Peer Support Worker at MPFT


Please note that lived experience roles require applicants to have personal lived experience of recovery from mental health challenges and having personally utilised inpatient mental health services. AS PART OF THE APPLICATION PROCESS PLEASE ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTION AT THE BEGINNING OF YOUR SUPPORTING STATEMENT. Do you have direct lived experience of mental health challenges and of accessing an inpatient mental health service?

Lived Experience of receiving care from inpatient mental health services is essential to fulfil the person specification requirements for this role. Please be aware that if this is the case, your application will not be disadvantaged but upon beginning employment with us, a transfer of care to another team (or potentially organisation) will be coordinated to ensure safe working for your care and employment needs. Similarly, if you if you or someone you know well need inpatient mental health services input whilst in role, we would arrange a transfer to another team to separate your care and your employment. The post holder will provide high quality individual supervision to Peer Support Workers within the allocated location.


To be actively involved in the process of recruitment of Peer Support Workers including being on interview panels
To proactively engage and work with a range of internal services including Human Resources and Occupational Health to ensure robust processes are in operation for the recruitment and maintenance of wellbeing of the Peer Support Workers

The Acute inpatient wards at the Redwoods Centre provides mental health support to people between 18-65 who are suffering from a severe and enduring mental illness. The wards provide services to the communities of Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin.


To effectively co-deliver training, including the accredited Developing Expertise in Peer Support, Peer Support Worker Team Preparation sessions in readiness for peer support workers taking up post within teams; and learning and development activities within the Recovery College.
Regular hours would be 09:00 to 17:00 hrs Monday to Friday

Ability to demonstrate first person experiential knowledge of recovery
Completed Peer Support Worker training (preferably accredited)
Evidence of further training in relation to personal recovery principles
Evidence of continuing professional and personal development
Accredited certificate in Life Coaching

Own personal lived experience of recovery from mental health challenges
Experience of having personally utilised inpatient mental health services
Experience of positively sharing own life experiences, and personal recovery journey, with service users, carers and others
Experience of working in a range of health and/or social care settings as a peer support worker

This post is subject to the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975 and as such it will be necessary for a submission for Disclosure to be made to the Disclosure and Barring Service (formerly known as CRB) to check for any previous criminal convictions.
