JOB DESCRIPTION
JOB TITLE: Teacher - Primary
REPORTS TO: Principal
RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
* Exercise of general professional duties: perform professional duties as required under the direction of the principal or board as applicable.
* Exercise of particular duties: perform duties as reasonably directed by the principal, board, or school principal as applicable.
* Planning: planning and preparing courses and lessons; teaching pupils according to educational needs; setting and marking work; assessing and reporting on pupil development and attainment.
* General duties: promote the progress and well‑being of pupils; provide advice and guidance on educational and social matters; maintain records and reports; communicate with parents; liaise with outside bodies as approved; participate in meetings.
* Assessment/Reporting: provide oral and written assessments, reports and references as appropriate.
* Staff Development/Professional Development: participate in staff development and performance review; review teaching methods; pursue further training and professional development; advise on courses of study, materials, and pastoral arrangements.
* Discipline/Health and Safety: maintain good order and discipline; safeguard pupils’ health and safety; participate in curriculum/administration meetings; pastoral arrangements.
* Public Examinations: assist with preparation and assessment for public examinations; record and report assessments; supervise pupils during examinations as required.
* Management/Administration: contribute to selection and professional development of other teachers; coordinate or manage other teachers; participate in curriculum, organisation and pastoral management; assist with administrative and organisational tasks; supervise staff providing support; attend assemblies where required; register attendance and supervise pupils as needed.
* Hours of work: comply with term‑time days/hours as specified; ensure appropriate break periods; duties may extend to 195 days per year and 1,265 hours per year excluding preparation and travel; mid‑day supervision limits apply where not employed as a mid‑day supervisor; adherence to defined weekly and yearly working limits.
* Staff cover: provide supervision and teaching for absent colleagues as specified by school policy and enrolment figures.

SECTION 1 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
The essential criteria cover qualifications, experience and other requirements necessary to perform the role. Demonstrate on your application how you meet these criteria.
* Qualifications/Professional Membership: Hold a teaching qualification recognised to teach in grant‑aided schools in Northern Ireland by the closing date.
* Experience: Demonstrable experience of teaching within a Preschool setting, Foundation Stage or Key Stage One; experience in facilitating learning through play; experience with pupils with learning difficulties; willingness to support co‑curricular and after‑school activities.
* Other: Registered with the General Teaching Council for Northern Ireland (GTCNI) before taking up post; pre‑employment checks completed.
SECTION 2 - ESSENTIAL CRITERIA
The following essential criteria will be measured during interview/selection:
* Knowledge: Knowledge of the Northern Ireland Curriculum; pastoral care and promoting positive behaviour (Foundation Stage and Key Stage One); current assessment methods; safeguarding and child protection policy/practice.
* Skills/Abilities: Ability to promote and coordinate Play across the school; effective teaching and classroom management; creating an inclusive learning environment; ability to work collaboratively with pupils, colleagues, parents and the community; ability to work as part of a team and motivate others.

SECTION 3 - DESIRABLE CRITERIA
Desirable criteria may be used to narrow the candidate pool. These include:
* Experience of teaching Foundation Stage or Key Stage 1 within the last 7 years; at least 1 year (essential) and/or 2 years (desirable) of paid teaching experience.
* Knowledge/experience in preparing pupils for school music events, choir, productions and local music festivals.
