Job Summary

We are looking to recruit a 0.5/0.6 WTE Consultant Lead Paediatric Neuropsychologist in the Department of Paediatric Psychology (DPP), Leeds Children's Hospital. This substantive post is based at the Leeds General Infirmary (LGI) and, whilst the post offers working time flexibilities, attendance on‑site two days per week is essential.

The post-holder will lead the Paediatric Neuropsychology Team, which is one of four in the DPP. The team consists of two Principal Paediatric Neuropsychologists, one Senior Clinical Psychologist, an Early Career Clinical Psychologist and an Assistant Psychologist. Clinically, your role will involve oversight of referral pathways and access targets, monitoring performance and efficiencies together with the Head of Department and Business Manager. You will also afford a wider range of clinical experiences, including face‑to‑face assessments, therapy and supervision.

As a senior member of the Department, your role will contribute to the leadership, management and strategic objective‑setting of the Department.

The post-holder will be joining a well‑established, highly respected Neurology group.

The Department fully adheres to the BPS position on CPD and values continuous learning, and you would have the opportunity to join department‑wide workstreams (e.g., parent‑notes project, analogue to‑digital strategy group).

Main Duties of the Job

To lead, manage and provide a qualified Paediatric Neuropsychology service to children and young people (CYP) seen in the Regional Paediatric Neurology Specialty, across all sites and sectors of care by providing highly specialist neuro/psychological assessment and therapy.

Line manage two Principal Paediatric Neuropsychologists, and offer supervision of other team members in line with Diploma and QiCN requirements.

Join the departmental Senior Leadership Team (SLT) and participate in leading/overseeing departmental strategic and operational objectives.


About the Department

The Department of Paediatric Psychology (DPP), with over 35 clinicians, is organised in four sectors of care: Long Term Conditions, Surgery & Oncology, Cardiology & Critical Care, and Paediatric Neuropsychology. You will be line‑managed by the Head of Department.

The Department is academically ambitious with good links to Yorkshire and Humber Region DClinPsych Training Programmes as well as the Schools of Medicine and Psychology at the University of Leeds. Scholarly activity is an important part of what we do, and the successful candidate will be encouraged to engage in academic opportunities.

Person Specification – Qualifications

* Post graduate doctoral level training in clinical psychology, including specifically models of psychopathology, two or more distinct psychological therapies and lifespan developmental psychology
* Professional Registration with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC).
* Listed on, or eligible for, entry onto the British Psychological Society (BPS) Specialist Register of Clinical Neuropsychologists.


Person Specification – Experience

* Experience of specialist psychological and neuropsychological assessment and treatment of clients across the full range of care settings, including outpatient, community, primary care and in‑patient
* Experience of providing neuropsychology within an inpatient neurorehabilitation centre is crucial for this post
* Experience of working with a wide variety of client groups, across the whole life course presenting problems that reflect the full range of clinical severity
* Maintaining a high degree of professionalism in the face of highly emotive and distressing problems, verbal abuse and the threat of physical abuse
* Further training in a specialised area of clinical practice through formal post‑doctoral training (diploma or equivalent)
* Or a combination of specialist short courses together with an evidenced portfolio of supervised practice‑based learning in a specialist area of clinical practice
* Experience selecting, administering and interpreting a wide range of neuropsychological tests to provide neuropsychological assessment within the context of neurological or neurosurgical presentations


Person Specification – Desirable

* Experience of professional management of qualified and pre‑qualified clinical psychologists in an acute health setting/s
* Experience of neuropsychological assessment of children and young people
* Experience of managing (or exposure to) operational pressures (e.g., access targets, patient prioritisation, and productivity management)


Person Specification – Skills & Behaviours

* Highly developed knowledge of the theory and practice of clinical psychology and clinical neuropsychology
* Doctoral level knowledge of clinical psychology including highly developed knowledge of lifespan developmental psychology, models of psychopathology, and two or more distinct psychological therapies
* Skills in the use of highly complex methods of psychological assessment, intervention and management frequently requiring sustained and intense concentration
* Knowledge of the neuropsychological profiles associated with a range of neurological, neurosurgical and neuropsychological disorders to provide diagnostic neuropsychological assessment
* Understanding of the psychometric principles that underpin cognitive testing. Ability to apply principles of management and rehabilitation to a range of neuropsychological/ neurological disorders
* A high‑level ability to communicate effectively at both a written and oral level, highly complex, highly technical and clinically sensitive information to patients, their families and carers
