SSCA Cancer Improvement Manager - Band 8a

An exciting Cancer Improvement Manager position is available within the Surrey and Sussex Cancer Alliance (SSCA). This role has been created to make a direct, measurable difference to cancer outcomes for patients across our footprint, leading local, targeted improvement work at NHS Trust sites across Surrey and Sussex.

The successful candidate will lead, help design and manage change, working effectively with colleagues, local partners, and those who draw upon cancer services within Surrey & Sussex.

Main Duties

* Work site‑based alongside operational and clinical teams at any SSCA provider to drive improvements in cancer performance and outcomes.
* Diagnose performance challenges and lead targeted cancer improvement projects, focusing on cancer waiting times performance and addressing unwarranted variation.
* Develop evidence‑based improvement plans and lead end‑to‑end project delivery using recognised improvement and project management methodologies.
* Build trusted relationships with clinical, operational, and multidisciplinary teams at the host trust, acting as the visible, credible link between the provider and SSCA.
* Translate complex performance data into clear narratives and actionable plans, reporting regularly on progress to both trust and Cancer Alliance leadership.
* Contribute to shared learning across the Alliance networks and support the development of sustainable improvement capability.
* Co‑create and deliver a portfolio of improvement projects with system and provider partners, securing engagement and approval from senior leaders to drive performance and service improvement across cancer pathways.

Person Specification


Qualifications

* Educated to Masters level or equivalent training and experience.
* Evidence of continuous professional development.
* Formal project management training qualification or equivalent experience.


Knowledge and Experience

* Significant experience of project/service improvement in a healthcare setting.
* Comprehensive understanding of project management principles (prioritising, planning, resource planning).
* Understanding of current healthcare policy and guidance for the needs of people affected by cancer.
* Experience influencing without direct authority in a challenging, complex, and rapidly changing environment.
* Analysing and interpreting complex data sets and presenting to a wide range of audiences.
* Developing and implementing policies, operational procedures, and guidance to improve cancer care.
* Knowledge of cancer pathways and performance.
* Knowledge of issues in cancer care/services and demand and capacity management.

This post requires a Disclosure and Barring Service check under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act (Exceptions Order) 1975.


Salary

£59,798 to £67,020 per year (pro‑rata). The role is a site‑based position and does not offer home working.
