Introduction to the Role
Farshore is a children’s imprint of HarperCollins. Farshore’s mission is to make every child a proud reader through a broad and diverse portfolio of books that offers multiple ways into the joy of reading. It is the home to the UK’s leading authors and illustrators across fiction, non‑fiction, picture book, brands and gaming imprints.
We are looking for a new editor to join our dynamic fiction team – a passionate, innovative and commercial reader who is plugged into the children’s, YA and NA market and has experience of working with authors. As a confident editor at all stages of the editorial process, you will provide exceptional author care and bring big energy to identify opportunities, find new authors and contribute fresh ideas.
In addition to supporting the editors with their titles, you will have scope to acquire new projects and help shape the list as well as manage your own stable of authors. We encourage new ways of working and reaching readers – you will be an integral part of that.
Key Tasks And Accountabilities
* Ownership of and main point of contact for a list of authors, project‑managing titles through all stages of the publishing process.
* Structural and line edits for own authors.
* Providing editorial support for the other editors on the team, including taking on line edits and occasional proofreading.
* Working with the Managing Editor and production team to keep books on the critical path.
* Maintaining communication with authors and agents, and liaising with teams across the business including marketing, sales, rights, operations and digital.
* Curating best‑in‑class metadata/AI for all authors and reviewing metadata for own front‑list and back‑list titles on a regular basis, ensuring up‑to‑date information is available internally and externally.
* Presenting titles in Sales and Rights highlights meetings and pitching new projects in acquisition meetings, with support from the team.
* Building and fostering relationships with agents to bring in the best new talent to the list.
* Regularly checking bestseller lists (e.g., Amazon and US/Aus charts) for titles showing growth.
* Monitoring relevant trends on social media and noise around titles within book communities, chat groups and all social media platforms.
* Contributing to IP ideas, content development and seeking out new writers.
* Briefing jackets, writing cover copy and seeing covers through all stages.
Skills Required
* A passion for children’s, YA and NA fiction.
* Experience working at assistant editor or junior editor level, including line and structural editorial work.
* Attention to detail and experience of proofreading.
* Experience of working directly with authors.
* Desire to acquire projects and build own list.
* Demonstrable sound market knowledge of children’s/YA/NA and wider market trends.
* Excellent organisational and time‑management skills, working calmly under pressure.
* A team player, working in close proximity with internal teams.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Building and maintaining good working relationships with authors and agents.
* Confidence in presenting ideas to the team.
* Familiarity with key social media platforms.
* Adaptability to new systems.
* Advanced MS Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
