GP Assistant (Maternity Cover)

Job Summary
We are a friendly and supportive rural GP practice looking for a motivated GP Assistant to join our team on a 12‑month fixed‑term maternity cover contract (30 to 37.5 hours per week). The role supports the smooth running of GP clinics by handling routine administrative duties, enabling GPs to focus more time on patient care.
Responsibilities
* Act as a key liaison between the admin team, NHS services, and patients to promote safe and efficient care.
* Arrange appointments, referrals, tests, and follow‑up appointments.
* Prepare patients prior to seeing the GP, ensuring they have all necessary information and documentation.
* Complete basic factual forms and core elements for the GP to approve and sign (e.g., insurance, mortgage, benefits agency forms).
* Explain treatment procedures to patients.
* Assist the GP in liaising with outside agencies, such as calling on‑call consultants and arranging admissions.
* Sort and prioritise clinical post for the GP, and signpost to other staff when appropriate.
* Extract coding information from clinical letters and add to notes.
* Manage and upload safeguarding documentation and audit information.
* Monitor emails relevant to the GP and patient care.
* Help the GP manage, prioritise, and action tasks.
* Track and record evidence of experience against the national competency framework.
* Inform the Admin Lead and/or Senior Partner of any concerns and request professional development as needed.
* Be aware of own professional boundaries and know what to do when they are reached.

* Good written, oral, and presenting communication skills.
* Strong IT skills – Microsoft Excel, Word, Outlook.

* Familiarity with practice‑based systems (e.g., SystmOne, Accurx, TeamNet).

Salary: £13.25 an hour
Contract: Fixed term, 12 months
Working pattern: Full‑time or Part‑time
