About the Role
An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic Payroll Clerk to join our busy Payroll Team at Pinderfields Hospital. This role offers an excellent opportunity for an individual looking to develop a career within payroll and NHS services. Following successful completion of a comprehensive 2‑year training programme, the post will progress from Band 3 to Band 4.
As a Payroll Clerk, you will work alongside experienced team members and be responsible for the day‑to‑day processing of payroll information, including data input, calculations, and maintaining accurate employee records. The position requires delivering a high‑quality payroll service to staff across the organisation.
Main Duties
* Provide an accurate payroll and pension service to the Trust, preparing and entering data into ESR in a timely and accurate manner and within the payroll processing calendar to ensure all employees are paid on time.
* Complete minimum wage checks relating to the Home Electronics Scheme.
* Check and input salary sacrifice lease cars onto ESR.
* Ensure changes to employee records are made in line with ESR guidelines, maintaining accurate data for reporting purposes.
* Set up new employees onto ESR, correctly configuring all system details for payments, deductions, bank account, tax code, National Insurance and pension details.
* Process leaver details on staff departures, ensuring correct final payments, issuing P45s, updating pension records and closing accounts promptly to avoid manual calculations.
* Maintain accurate sickness absence and entitlement records for each employee, advising staff and managers on half‑pay and no‑pay situations and managing deemed pensionable pay records as required.
* Calculate and arrange manual payments for employees when needed, ensuring correct statutory and pension deductions are applied and entered onto ESR.
* Investigate any discrepancies in payment, expenses or pensions, and explain individual pay matters professionally and tactfully.
* Ensure all payments comply with employment terms, the Agenda for Change handbook, Trust agreements, pension scheme regulations and internal procedures, meeting quality standards and audit requirements.
Qualifications
* Sound educational background – 4 GCSEs to grade C or above, including Maths.
* Experience with computer software programmes such as Microsoft Office, e‑mail and internet.
* Previous payroll experience and use of electronic HR/Payroll systems to view and enter employment data and collate reports.
* Knowledge of statutory regulations PAYE, NIC, SSP, SMP, SAP, SPP and data protection (Data Protection Act).
* Understanding of handling sensitive and confidential issues and work policies.
