I'm working with an innovative engineering technology company at an exciting inflection point in their journey. Having evolved from a research-focused organisation into a commercial business, they are now scaling their software engineering capability to meet growing customer demands in a highly complex, integrated hardware and software environment.
They're looking for an exceptional Software Engineering Director who can unite, align, and energise three distinct software development teams - currently operating in silos - into a cohesive, collaborative unit that delivers integrated solutions on time, every time.
This isn't just a leadership role; it's a transformation opportunity.
You'll be the driving force behind creating alignment across C#, LabVIEW, and Python/Data Science teams, ensuring they work in lockstep with hardware manufacturing, product management, and multiple engineering disciplines to meet critical customer milestones.
THE OPPORTUNITY
You will provide critical leadership by:
* Owning and driving a coherent software strategy across the business that breaks down silos and creates unified delivery
* Leading three software competence managers specialising in C#, LabView, and Python/Data Science, transforming them from independent teams into an integrated software engineering function
* Partnering with architects to design scalable, reliable, and maintainable software systems that serve both current needs and future growth
* Integrating software with hardware in a dynamic, multi-disciplinary development environment where timing and coordination are mission-critical
WHAT YOU'LL BRING
* Proven track record leading multiple software engineering teams in organisations where software and hardware development are equally critical
* Extensive experience in team leadership and people management, with the ability to inspire and unite teams around common goals
* Management of software engineering managers across multiple teams and products, ideally in precision engineering or complex technical hardware environments
* Demonstrable success in software development for machine tools, desktop applications, and real-time control systems
* Experience integrating software with evolving hardware across cross-functional teams, managing dependencies and delivering to tight deadlines
* Strong agile/lean methodology experience in multi-disciplinary environments
* Deep knowledge of software development cycles and programming best practices across multiple languages and platforms
You're a self-motivated leader who inspires teams to deliver their best work, with excellent communication skills and a collaborative approach to problem-solving. You understand that bringing teams together isn't just about process - it's about creating shared purpose and accountability.
This is predominantly an onsite role with some work-from-home flexibility.
