Overview

Our critical care department not only has 33 commissioned critical care beds for both level 2 and 3 patients we have also been able to create an exciting 5 bed enhanced surgical recovery unit. This enhanced surgical recovery area cares for level 1.5 elective-post operative patient. Our dedicated critical care team is also responsible for a range of clinical and development activities within the unit.


Responsibilities

* Caring for critically ill patients in the hospital
* Caring for patients after major operations
* Providing first responder support to all unstable patients in the hospital
* Providing support to all patients with serious medical illness and instability
* Develop, implement and evaluate programmes of care as part of the multi-disciplinary team
* Participate in maintaining a safe, comfortable and therapeutic environment for all patients and carers and maintain agreed standards of nursing care
* Determine nursing priorities and plans for patient care; inform the nurse in charge when changes in circumstances may affect patient care
* Maintain nursing records in accordance with NMC and Trust guidelines
* Maintain and improve quality of patient care through contribution to Essence of Care and clinical benchmarking within the unit
* Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients
* Provide information and support to patients/carers, and ensure those involved in care are aware of changes in patient condition
* Assist in the safe custody, checking and administration of drugs, including inotropes
* Develop clinical knowledge and skills to care for critically ill patients, including management of multiple organ failure and complex nursing needs
* Develop the ability to undertake expanded practice to optimise patient care, including respiratory support, haemodynamic monitoring, and renal replacement therapies
* Uphold the reputation of the Trust and safeguard the wellbeing and dignity of patients and their relatives
* Work in accordance with the NMC Code of Conduct and maintain active status on the NMC Register
* Sustain and improve knowledge; identify objectives within a PDP that support high standards of clinical care
* Provide cover for and undertake duties of absent colleagues as necessary
* Follow all organisation policies and procedures


Qualifications

* Registered Nurse, current NMC registration
* Diploma in Nursing (2 Diploma; Desirable criteria)


Desirable criteria

* Mentorship/teaching qualification
* Post registration qualification in relevant specialty
* Minimum 6 months post-registration experience and successful completion of band 5 foundation gateway competencies
* Experience within relevant clinical setting
* Evidence of maintaining a clinical learning environment
* Evidence of working with students; knowledge of current nursing issues and clinical governance
* Demonstrates awareness of own limitations; ability to organise workload and delegate tasks
* Ability to work as part of a team; ability to support less experienced staff; problem-solving abilities
* Good written and verbal communication skills
* Basic IT skills (including e-mail and word processing)
* Supportive of colleagues; ability to work in changing environments
* Committed to high standards of patient care; exemplary personal standards of conduct and behaviour
* Maintain personal and professional development; willingness to be flexible and adaptable
* You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
