Perioperative Services Manager (Theatres & Sterile Services)

MedicsPro is recruiting a senior Perioperative Services Manager (Theatres & Sterile Services) for an established independent hospital in Essex.
This is not a step-up role. We are looking for someone already operating at a senior level, with a strong track record of leading theatre services in the UK — typically 5+ years’ experience in a comparable leadership position.
You will be accountable for:
• Overall theatre performance, utilisation and service delivery
• Patient safety, risk management and regulatory compliance
• Leading and developing multidisciplinary teams
• Budget control, workforce planning and operational efficiency
The role sits within the senior clinical leadership team, with direct influence on strategy, standards and how services are delivered day to day.
Key responsibilities
Safety & governance
• Drive a strong patient safety culture and ensure concerns are identified, managed and learned from.
• Lead clinical risk management, including investigations, mitigation plans and maintaining a service risk register.
• Ensure effective local governance, including timely incident review and shared learning.
• Act as the safeguarding lead for the service area, escalating concerns appropriately.
• Champion infection prevention and safe practice in medicines management within scope.
Clinical effectiveness & operational delivery
• Lead governance and quality activity, embedding clinical effectiveness and continuous improvement.
• Support service development and operational planning across theatres and sterile services.
• Manage resources and consumables effectively, balancing quality, safety and cost control.
• Oversee audit and assurance activity, using data to improve outcomes and performance.
• Drive workforce planning, safe staffing, skill mix and demand/capacity management.
Leadership & people
• Provide visible leadership, coaching and line management to the perioperative teams.
• Lead performance conversations and support capability development, training plans and succession planning.
• Create an open culture where staff feel confident to speak up.
Essential criteria
• Registered clinician with NMC or HCPC.
• Significant post-registration perioperative/theatres experience.
• Proven leadership and people management experience at a senior level.
• Strong governance mindset and confidence driving standards, compliance and improvement.
Desirable
• Leadership/management qualification and evidence of ongoing CPD.
• Experience of budget management and demand/capacity profiling.
Pre-employment checks
