Consultant in Stroke Medicine and Acute Frailty

The Trust is seeking a Consultant to join its expanding Stroke and Acute Frailty services. The role contributes to delivering high-quality hyperacute stroke care, general stroke management, TIA assessment, and consultant-led frailty reviews in the Emergency Department and Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC). The successful candidate will work within a growing multidisciplinary team and support ongoing service development, teaching, governance, and research.
Main duties of the job
* Stroke Medicine
o Conduct HASU and ASU ward rounds.
o Provide thrombolysis management (including out-of-hours participation in the regional telemedicine rota).
o Run and support the daily open-access TIA clinic.
o Participate in mechanical thrombectomy pathways and hyper-acute stroke imaging workflows.
o Deliver weekend stroke ward rounds on a 1-in-5 rota.
o Contribute to ongoing stroke research, audit, and quality improvement.
* Acute Frailty
o Provide weekly consultant-led frailty reviews in ED and SDEC.
o Work alongside Early Intervention Teams (OT/PT) to reduce admissions and length of stay.
o Support development of expanding frailty pathways, frailty assessment units, and urgent frailty clinics.
* Education & Governance
o Teach junior doctors, medical students, and allied professionals.
o Act as an Educational Supervisor with involvement in appraisals and clinical governance.
o Participate in CPD, service development, audit, and departmental meetings.

Education and Qualifications
Essential
* MBBS or Basic Medical Degree
* MRCP or equivalent
* Hold a certificate CCT in geriatrics or be within 6 months of completion of training or be on or eligible for the UK Specialist Register at the date of interview
* Full GMC registration
Desirable
* MD/PhD
* Possession of ALS
Experience & Knowledge
Essential
* Ability to provide expert clinical opinion across a wide range of problems within COE
* Wide experience in COE and General Internal Medicine
Academic Achievements
Essential
* Ability to use research outcomes in clinical practice
* Knowledge of using evidence base medicine to support decision making
* Experience of conducting clinical audit
Desirable
* Involvement in research projects and published papers
Key Skills
Essential
* Ability and enthusiasm for teaching health care professionals and medical students in a COE & General Medicine setting
* Capable of organising and prioritising work effectively
* Motivation and ability to plan and develop the service
