Job overview

****** THIS POSITION IS ONLY OPEN TO CURRENT UNIVERSITY HOSPITALS NHS FOUNDATION TRUST EMPLOYEES ******

Air Ambulance Charity Kent Surrey Sussex are recruiting a dedicated Helicopter Emergency Medical Service (HEMS) Dispatcher, based at the Emergency Operations Centre in either Medway (Gillingham) or Crawley.

The role involves identifying suitable calls, tasking resources, and providing ongoing remote support to Air Ambulance helicopters and response cars using a decision support tool.

As the first link in the HEMS service chain, the dispatcher must recognise which patients will benefit from rapid enhanced care. The role is challenging and requires close work with the SECAmb critical care desk, alongside making independent decisions about dispatching aircraft or response vehicles. Strong focus and concentration are essential, particularly regarding flight safety and support during patient transfers.

The HEMS desk operates 24/7, with dispatchers working 12‑hour rotating shifts across day and night operations.

We are looking for a reliable individual with some understanding of 999 call taking or resource dispatch, able to work as part of the HEMS team within the SECAmb EOC and represent the charity professionally.

The role requires extensive use of computer and communication systems, strong verbal communication skills, and the ability to prioritise urgent tasks.

Please note: This role does not meet the minimum criteria for visa sponsorship under the current UK immigration rules, which set specific salary and skill thresholds. As such, we are unable to provide sponsorship for this post. Applicants will therefore need to already have the right to work in the UK to be considered. We include this information at the outset to provide clarity and avoid unnecessary inconvenience for applicants.

If you do not meet the sponsorship requirements, and you are applying using a Graduate visa as your right to work, you must have a minimum of 18 months remaining on your visa at time of application.

Main duties of the job

This role will be complex and challenging at times. You will work closely with the SECAmb critical care desk to assist with appropriate tasking and resourcing of incidents, but also need to make autonomous decisions about dispatching the HEMS aircraft or response cars. This role will require a high degree of focus and concentration, especially in relation to flight safety issues and remote support of the HEMS team on scene and during patient transfer to hospital.

The HEMS desk operates 24/7 with dispatchers working a 12 hour rotating shift pattern to support both daytime and night time aircraft dispatch and operations.

We are seeking a sensible and reliable person with some understanding of the 999 call taking and resource dispatch function that can work as a member of the HEMS team within the SECAmb EOC and represent the charity and the service we deliver.

There will be a high degree of computer and communication equipment use and this post will be subject to the Display Screen Equipment guidance issued by the HSE.

Good verbal communication skills will be essential and the ability to prioritise urgent tasks.
