We are seeking Specialist Biomedical Scientists (SBMS) in Microbiology responsible for the technical diagnosis of infections and determining appropriate anti-infective therapy using advanced microbiological methods. The role involves providing efficient microbiology services essential for patient care, supervising and mentoring less experienced staff, and offering expert advice on microbiology services.
The Diagnostic Clinical Microbiology/Virology Service is delivered from Glasgow Royal Infirmary and Queen Elizabeth University Hospital, serving hospital-based, general practice, private sector, and academic clients.
Applicants must hold an IBMS-accredited BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Sciences and be registered with the HCPC as a Biomedical Scientist. Those expecting to complete their degree soon and attain HCPC registration are encouraged to apply. The successful candidate will need to have or complete the IBMS Specialist Diploma in Medical Microbiology. The position is based at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary Microbiology Laboratory, equipped with state-of-the-art microbiology technology, processing approximately 400,000 specimens annually, and accredited to UKAS standards ISO 15189 and ISO 17025.
The role involves participating in a 24/7 out-of-hours rota, working 37.5 hours across 7 days, including evenings, weekends, holidays, and on-call shifts from 8 pm to 8 am.
