Point of Care Ultrasound Imaging Fellowship
Oxford University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts in the country. This program is aimed at senior Critical Care trainees looking to develop comprehensive practical skills and knowledge in ultrasound diagnostics, focusing on transthoracic cardiac echocardiography, pleural imaging and intervention, vascular access and abdominal scanning techniques. The goal is to achieve an independent practitioner level within 12 months, completing the IC S F.I.C.E and F.U.S.I.C accreditation programmes in one year.
Programme Structure and Applicant Specification
The fellowship lasts twelve months and includes four separate modules, each approximately three months long with a dedicated day of supervision per week.
1. Focused Intensive Care Echocardiography (FICE) – dedicated, directly supervised all‑day lists in critical care and cardiology outpatients every week, with transition to independent scanning in clinical areas. Fellows will attend weekly FICE tutorials and cardiology imaging MDT meetings.
2. Pleural imaging – supervised scanning in the OCC, attending the Oxford Pleural Unit intervention and outpatient clinics.
3. Abdominal ultrasound – development of imaging knowledge and skills through outpatient lists and inpatient scans in collaboration with the radiology department.
4. Vascular imaging & access – opportunities throughout the training year within OCC and in collaboration with the Trust’s multidisciplinary vascular access team, covering PICC line placement and ultrasound‑guided peripheral & central venous cannulation.
Appointees will be enrolled in the compulsory departmental radiology ultrasound training programme and the Oxford FICE course. They will also supervise novice ICM trainees to develop teaching skills.
Eligibility
Candidates from any Intensive Care Medicine parent specialty are welcome to apply. Applicants should have airway competencies and resuscitation skills.
Supervision
The appointee will be supervised primarily by Dr Ben Griffiths, Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine & Anaesthesia. Progress will be monitored at regular intervals, and satisfactory completion of educational supervisor reports, fellowship lead recommendations, and peer feedback will be required at six months to proceed further in the program.
The fellowship trainees will operate on the senior tier of the OCC/Churchill Intensive Care Unit on call rota for the Oxford ICM training programme. The ICUs operate a 1:7 on call rota.
Application deadline: Tuesday 17 February 2026.
