The Joint Force Vetting Unit, based at Sussex Police HQ Lewes, covers vetting for both Surrey and Sussex force areas. We are seeking a Vetting Caseworker to join our team on a 2‑year fixed term contract / secondment until March 2028. The role will involve undertaking the vetting research function for both forces, gathering information and intelligence from a variety of police system checks to identify areas of risk and vulnerability, applying appropriate risk mitigation, and making recommendations for higher‑risk cases.
Responsibilities
* Deliver an effective and efficient vetting research function, providing advice to applicants, sponsors, officers and staff of all levels on security vetting and compiling clear, concise and accurate research and reports using a wide variety of Police Intelligence systems.
* Process vetting clearance, referencing failures or security risks to Joint Force Vetting Unit Supervisors and providing security briefings to newly appointed staff in accordance with national vetting codes of practice.
* Interrogate and research information and intelligence to assess threats and risks to police sites, systems and assets.
* Conduct enquiries with other national forces and partner agencies to obtain vetting levels, complaints and discipline histories for applicants across Sussex/Surrey, and undertake additional research when requested.
* Prepare for and conduct interviews and meetings with vetting applicants who have conditional clearance, providing security briefings and producing assessments to safeguard the organisation.
* Send out vetting forms, quality‑assure returned forms, identify missing or incorrectly completed information and return them for correction.
* Undertake telephone, e‑mail and face‑to‑face enquiries with applicants to clarify sensitive information.
* Carry out open source research on vetting cases as required.
* Make decisions on low‑risk vetting cases with support from the Vetting Authorised Professional Practice.
Essential Qualifications
* Competent and organised administrator capable of working with minimal supervision and using initiative to achieve results within agreed timescales.
* High level of computer literacy with demonstrated knowledge of the Intranet and Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
* Proven experience in gathering and collating relevant information to identify potential security risks, with the ability to analyse large amounts of information in differing formats.
* Ability to acquire and apply knowledge of legislation and administrative policies, procedures and systems to ensure that intelligence and data is managed correctly.
* Strong attention to detail and good problem‑solving skills, able to provide accurate research and suggest effective resolutions quickly.
* Required to obtain Security Check (SC) level vetting clearance for the role.
* Minimum of 5 years UK residency.
Desirable
* Experience of relevant Police computer systems necessary to undertake a wide range of system checks (e.g. PNC, PND, Experian, Centurion, NSVS, Niche, Open Source / Social Media) – training will be provided.
* Excellent interpersonal skills with well‑developed oral communication and skilled interview techniques to obtain voluntary information for conditional clearances and vetting briefings.
