Overview
Marine Systems Modelling (MSM) Group, National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Southampton. This post is part of the Global Challenges Research Fund project SOLSTICE, aiming to promote applications of ocean models for sustainable use of living marine resources in the Western Indian Ocean (WIO).
Responsibilities
* Support a large number of case studies using the high-resolution global ocean model NEMO by WIO and UK researchers.
* Improve and further develop a website that enables extraction and dissemination of subsets of NEMO data and hosting of uploaded media content about the model.
* Integrate the system with the JASMIN computational and data storage cluster hosted by STFC at Harwell, UK.
* Support capacity development of the Western Indian Ocean project partners by enabling access, analysis and visualization of high-resolution model output.
* Engage in a wide range of case studies using ocean model outputs, publish results in peer-reviewed literature as a co-author (and lead author for ambitious candidates), and build a knowledge base for an academic career in ocean modelling.
Qualifications and skills
* Strong first degree in a numerate, science, engineering, mathematics or computational discipline.
* Technical skills: knowledge of Django; Python usage in an operational/deployed mode; experience operating web applications in a Linux environment; experience with MySQL or similar databases; experience with Linux VM system administration; deployment and configuration of web servers, network interfaces, logging and system monitoring; development of web applications; installation and administration of databases and database servers; experience with installing/configuring web services in a Linux environment; experience delivering products that are version-controlled, well-documented and maintainable.
* Desirable: knowledge of numerical modelling or project experience in Earth Science disciplines.
* Excellent communication skills and motivation to work with stakeholders and researchers outside the natural sciences; willingness to travel frequently to the Western Indian Ocean region.
Role details
This is a Fixed Term Appointment for three years, starting as soon as possible. The post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is open to internal and external candidates. This is a full-time Band 6 position.
Salary: starting salary £28,200 per annum, with potential uplifts or allowances for exceptional candidates depending on skills and experience.
