Job Summary
The department of General Surgery at Queen Elizabeth Hospital Birmingham (QEHB) is seeking an enthusiastic Consultant in Emergency General Surgery with an interest in either Upper or Lower Gastro‑intestinal surgery. The role will support the delivery of the newly developed Surgical Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) facility and work closely with Acute Care Practitioners and resident doctors to redesign pathways and improve patient experience.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
* Lead the emergency surgical service, working with local managers and professional colleagues to run the service efficiently.
* Participate fully in the emergency on‑call rota, sharing nights and covering Monday‑Thursday and Friday‑Sunday duties.
* Support the development and delivery of the SDEC service alongside ACPs and resident doctors.
* Teach and supervise all specialist, foundation and core trainees, and contribute to postgraduate and undergraduate teaching.
* Carry out regular clinical audit, maintain continuous professional development, and participate actively in clinical governance.
* Develop audit and research interests within available resources.
* Fulfil any additional duties that fall within the broad framework of the post and respond flexibly to evolving Trust priorities.
Person Specification
* FRCS (Gen) or equivalent.
* Registered on the GMC specialist register.
* Wide experience in upper GI and lower GI surgery.
* Experience in the management of torso trauma.
* Strong people‑management skills.
* Excellent communication, organisational and team‑working skills.
* Ability to work under pressure and adhere to agreed management guidelines.
