and main responsibilities
1. To carry out duties / responsibilities in accordance with the Trust and Directorate Policies, Protocols including Health and Safety Policies.
2. To greet patients in a courteous and professional manner.
3. To check the relevant details of patients requiring Pathology tests, resolving and outstanding difficulties.
4. Obtain by venepuncture or capillary sampling the correct blood specimens(s).
5. Ensure samples are correctly labelled, put into the correct containers and otherwise properly treated so as to be suitable for the analyses requested.

Essential criteria
6. Good general education.
7. Must be numerate and literate with a good command of spoken and written English.
8. Previous phlebotomy experience within a patient setting.
9. Basic computer/keyboard skills
10. Ability to work systematically and under pressure in a busy environment
11. Ability to correctly follow appropriate procedures
Desirable criteria
12. College or university qualifications.
13. 1 year’s phlebotomy experience or, completed a venepuncture course.
14. Full employment history documented on application.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
15. Ability to develop knowledge of the importance and relevance of laboratory investigations to patient welfare.
16. Risks associated with needle stick injuries and correct procedures to prevent and to follow in the event of an injury
17. Awareness of the impact of blood borne viral infections on personal and others health
18. Correct procedures to follow in the event of violent patient behaviour.
19. Thorough knowledge and practice of the importance of good practice to prevent. cross infection
20. Knowledge of correct patient lifting techniques.
21. Have a professional manner/demeanour.
22. Ability to work as part of a team and as an individual.
23. Ability to use initiative to prioritise work. Ability to concentrate for long periods
24. Willing to work flexibly.
25. Able to speak English as necessary to undertake the role
