Trainee Clinical Photographer - Annex 21 70%

This post is an 18‑month fixed‑term secondment starting 1 September 2026 until 25 February 2028 to meet the needs of the service and qualification.

We are looking for a committed individual seeking to start a career as a Clinical Photographer in the Department of Medical Illustration at the University Hospital of Wales. The successful candidate will undergo an on‑the‑job training programme to develop a sound knowledge and skill base to qualify as a Band 5 Clinical Photographer. The trainee will also undertake the Level 7 Diploma in Clinical Photography, requiring additional hours outside the working day.
Main duties of the job
Work in a team of Clinical Photographers to produce clinical photographs and video to aid patient care, diagnosis, teaching, research and publications. Provide photographic knowledge and skills to support multidisciplinary teams across various clinical specialties. Work across a variety of clinical environments using standardised and non‑standardised techniques.
Welsh speaking ability is desirable; Welsh and/or English speakers are welcome to apply.

Skills and Attributes
* Experience working in a public/service or medical photography department.
* Creativity in interpreting client briefs, both clinical and non‑clinical.
* Good computer literacy, especially with digital imaging software.
* Patient management and communication skills to interact with a wide diversity of people.
* Organisational skills with the ability to prioritise and time‑manage work.
* Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
* Technical skills in digital photography, composition, visual perception, and working in studio and on location.
* Desire for further personal and professional development and qualifications.
* Membership of the Institute of Medical Illustrators.
* Active pursuit of continuing professional development (CPD).
* Welsh language skills desirable (levels 1–5).
Experience
* Evidence of a wide range of experience in clinical photography to a consistently high standard.
* Experience working in a public/service environment or a medical photography department.
Qualifications and Knowledge
* Degree in photography or a related media subject with a focus on photography; or equivalent experience.
* Knowledge of clinical photography practice across a range of environments.
* Knowledge of equipment, software, consent, confidentiality, copyright, Mental Capacity Act, Data Protection and GDPR.
* Understanding of equality and diversity issues.
* Postgraduate or Level 7 qualification in Clinical Photography or Medical Illustration (preferred).
* Membership or register with the Academy for Healthcare Science (AHCS) (desired).
Other
* Ability to use own transport suitable for carrying photographic/video equipment to other sites.
* Holding or pursuing a qualification that allows voluntary registration as a Medical Illustrator with AHCS.

Salary
£32,557 to £39,631 a year (Annex 21, 70 % of Band 5).
