Overview
Two opportunities for Advanced Specialist Pharmacists to provide expert clinical pharmacy input to Critical Care Services at University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust. The role supports development of a specialist clinical pharmacy service within Critical Care and offers progression toward advanced practice and non-medical prescribing within the service line.
Salary Band 8a, permanent, full-time with flexible working arrangements. Location: Derriford Road, Plymouth.
Responsibilities
* Provide high-quality, patient-focused clinical pharmacy service for patients within the Critical Care Pharmacy Team.
* Undertake teaching and clinical supervision of pharmacy staff and other healthcare staff.
* Deliver specialist clinical pharmacy services and advice to clinical specialties, demonstrating high clinical effectiveness.
* Develop clinical interest within a chosen area of clinical practice to support service delivery for a defined patient group.
* Collaborate with the Lead Pharmacist for Critical Care & Surgery and Associate Chief Pharmacist on strategic development of clinical pharmacy services and establish defined roles for pharmacist non-medical prescribers in critical care.
* Manage and deliver pharmacy services to ensure efficient use of resources, monitor drug expenditure, and deliver financial savings within critical care.
* Enhance pharmacist presence in outpatients clinical areas as part of the rehab team where appropriate.
* Lead and co-ordinate the clinical pharmacy team, ensuring training and competence for all roles; act as a role model within the team and across the service.
* Practice as an independent prescriber and work towards advanced clinical practice; engage in quality improvement and practice research.
* Write and review policies and procedures relevant to pharmacy practice in Critical Care; monitor and evaluate medicines-related protocols and guidelines.
* Provide education and training to healthcare professionals, including medical students.
* Participate in MDT/ward rounds and clinical governance forums to support treatment decisions, including highly complex patients.
* Develop inductions for pharmacists in Critical Care and contribute to PGD and non-medical prescribing initiatives where appropriate.
* Ensure effective liaison with all levels of healthcare staff, patients, and carers; contribute to antimicrobial surveillance and ensure appropriate prescribing.
* Identify opportunities for service changes with multidisciplinary and resource implications; promote compliance with local and national policies and formulary.
Qualifications
Essential
* Master’s Degree (or equivalent) in Pharmacy
* Postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy Certificate
* Current registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
* Postgraduate Clinical Pharmacy Diploma
* Non-medical prescriber (or willingness to undertake)
Desirable
* Current registration with the Royal Pharmaceutical Society
* Member of UKCPA or equivalent Critical Care group
* Postgraduate leadership qualification; postgraduate qualification in specialty
* Experience in leadership, management, and designing/developing pharmacy services
Aptitude and Abilities
* Good communication skills at all levels; effective time management
* Potential management ability and understanding of financial issues (desirable)
Knowledge & Experience
Essential
* Strong knowledge of clinical pharmacy and drug use in Critical Care
* Experience across a range of clinical specialties; effective leadership and communication skills
* Understanding of NHS priorities and strategic care agendas; ability to apply locally
* Excellent oral and written communication, report writing, CPD evidence, teaching and multidisciplinary working
Desirable
* Knowledge of treatment pathways and commissioning for Critical Care therapies
* Senior pharmacy management experience; experience in designing and developing pharmacy services; budget management and staff management
