Job Overview
Applications are invited to apply for the post of Locum Consultant Paediatrician in Acute Paediatrics for 12 months to cover maternity leave.
The successful candidate will join a team of thirteen Acute Consultant Paediatricians and seven Consultant Neonatologists.
The post is a seven session post with a 1:9 on call commitment for General Paediatrics.
We are also running a 1:9 Consultant of the Week system as well as 1:9 Paediatric Assessment Unit provision as part of a total of a pro‑rota 10‑session contract. The contract is split into 5 Direct Clinical Care (DCC) sessions and 2 Supporting Professional Activity (SPA) sessions in line with the Welsh Consultant Contract.
Main Duties of the Job
The successful candidate will:
* Have responsibility for Acute General Paediatric services
* Be expected to be actively involved in the clinical governance programme of the department, providing support to undergraduate and postgraduates as necessary
* Ensure maintenance of relevant skills through continuing professional development with an annual appraisal
* Provide clinical supervision for other paediatricians and clinical and educational supervision for specialist paediatric trainees
* Participate in the relevant children’s management meetings for the service

Qualifications
Essential Criteria
* MRCPCH by examination or equivalent
* Full GMC registration
* Valid BLS Training
Desirable Criteria
* Higher degree, e.g., MSc, MD, PhD in Paediatrics
* Research degree
* Training the Trainers’ certification
* On the GMC’s Specialist Register
Experience
Essential Criteria
* Ability to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Higher Specialist Paediatric Training
* Valid level 3 Safeguarding Training
* Valid APLS Training
* Evidence of participation in clinical audit/QI project, understanding the role of these in improving the medical practice
* Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence, so as to improve clinical outcomes
Desirable Criteria
* Experience working in the NHS
* Wider experience, research, and training, in providing subspeciality service (if applicable)
* Valid NLS Training
Knowledge and Skills
Essential Criteria
* Ability to communicate effectively with patients, their relatives, colleagues, managers, other agencies, and staff at all levels
* Ability to work unsupervised and make decisions
* Demonstrated ability to manage time effectively
* Meets the requirements of the GMC’s ‘Good Medical Practice’
* Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff
* Knowledge of the management and structure of the NHS
* Understanding of management issues including medical management, clinical governance, service planning, and quality improvement
* Ability to work under pressure

* RCPCH SPIN module in Paediatric Respiratory Medicine
* Training or experience in allergy and asthma
* Evidence of leadership attributes and experience
