Job Overview
The Procurement and Supply Chain Management function is responsible for interfacing with third‑party organisations that support our business, including procurement of goods and services and relationship management that underpins those activities. The Senior Procurement and Supply Chain Manager leads the design, implementation and continuous improvement of procurement and supply chain strategies for major programmes within their sector(s), ensuring alignment with group strategies and ESG objectives.
Key Responsibilities
* Develop a strategic approach for procurement and supply chain management across major programmes and ensure robust strategies are implemented.
* Deliver responsible procurement across allocated projects, supporting project delivery teams while remaining aligned to group P&SC targets and objectives.
* Ensure a robust and structured supply chain exists and is correctly deployed to support both work‑winning and successful project delivery.
* Support an implemented category management approach within the sector to leverage spend and performance, staying aligned to group category management strategies.
* Drive ESG initiatives, including SME development, social value creation, zero‑carbon solutions and safety, in collaboration with the Head of Sustainable Procurement and Relationship Management.
* Promote collaboration between the business and the supply chain to unlock value through innovation and best practice, applying ISO 44001 principles.
* Maintain strong governance to protect the business from unnecessary risk and enable effective performance management of the supply chain.
* Work closely with the Central Procurement function to ensure compatibility between activities of respective functions.
* Establish and maintain strong relationships with key suppliers, negotiating contracts and ensuring compliance with terms and conditions.
* Develop relationships with client supply chain and procurement teams to assist them in achieving their goals.
* Use data to enable effective decision‑making.
* Continuously improve procurement and supply‑chain processes to enhance efficiency and effectiveness.
Essential Knowledge, Skills and Experience
* Significant experience in a similar level role.
* Some experience in the sector.
* Enthusiasm for driving improvement in best practice.
* Strong emotional intelligence and stakeholder engagement skills.
* Extensive knowledge of supply‑chain management and procurement strategy development.
* Experience in collaborative working and implementing innovation.
* Adaptable, agile approach with accountability for change initiatives.
* Strong negotiation and contract management skills.
* Commitment to sustainable procurement practices and key principles.
* Ability to communicate vision and strategic direction.
* Highly commercial with proven ability to unlock business value through procurement.
* Strong numerical, financial and data analysis skills.
* Excellent proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook, Teams).
Desirable
* Experience delivering category management.
* Knowledge of infrastructure industry procurement and supply‑chain operations.
* Experience working within a matrix organisation and influencing at all levels.
* Knowledge of Costain procurement and supply‑chain management systems and requirements.
* Working knowledge of procurement‑based software such as SourceDogg, eJAGGAER, Arriba or similar.
* Experience negotiating NEC3/NEC4 subcontracts to deliver favourable commercial outcomes.
* Previous knowledge of framework projects and associated procurement practices.
Essential Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, Supply Chain Management, or a related field.
* Member of the Chartered Institute of Procurement & Supply qualified or a similar professional certification in procurement (e.g. CPSM).
Desirable Qualifications
* MBA or Master’s degree in a related procurement field.
* MCIM or ILM Leadership degree.
