Senior Clinical Scientist (Vascular)

The role of the post-holder is to participate in the provision of Vascular Ultrasound and other services by the Non-Ionising Radiation section of Medical Physics and Clinical Engineering. The section delivers a range of clinical, scientific, technical and advisory services relating to the application of non-ionising at the University Hospital of Wales and other hospital sites. It comprises 6 clinical scientists, 3 healthcare assistants, 1 clinical co-ordinator, and 1 receptionist. There are strong links with vascular surgery, medicine, haematology, nephrology, cardiology and other clinical services in the Health Board, as well as Cardiff University.

The post-holder is required to provide safe, effective and timely diagnostic vascular ultrasound services to the Cardiff & Vale University Health Board and General Practitioners as directed. This will involve the use of complex imaging and measurement equipment for direct patient assessment; theywill assume a high degree of autonomy, taking direct responsibility for reporting the results of the investigation to referring clinicians and advising the patient on the appropriate course of action. They will also be expected to provide scientific and clinical support in the areas of vascular ultrasound, participate in the research and development activities of the Section, contributing to the teaching and training of staff and students.


Main duties of the job

Participating in the provision of a safe diagnostic vascular ultrasound service. Performing highly specialistinvestigations appropriate forLevel 7 of the Healthcare Science Career framework, including within the Department and outpatient clinics, Llandough Hospital,portable scans.

This post is fixed term/secondment for 12 months due to maternity cover. If you are interested in applying for the secondment position, you must obtain permission from your current line manager prior to applying for this post.

Job responsibilities

Participating in the provision of a safe, effective and timely diagnostic vascular ultrasound service for about 10,000 patients per annum to the Cardiff and Vale UHB, other Health Boards and General Practitioners.

Performing highly specialist patient investigations appropriate for Career Level 7 of the Healthcare Science Career framework, specifically assessment of carotid & vertebral arteries, peripheral venous imaging to diagnose Deep Vein Thrombosis, and imaging of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

Performing highly specialist patient investigations within the Department but also in outpatient clinics, Llandough Hospital, and portable scans on the wards, where highly developed manual dexterity and physical fitness are also important.

Ensuring that patients are treated with care and respect and that their confidentiality is maintained.

Performing clinical investigations on patients who are often frail or acutely ill, or where there is frequent exposure to unpleasant working conditions and some exposure to hazards.

Operating sophisticated imaging and measurement equipment including three-dimensional, real-time, colour-flow ultrasound scanners, with high accuracy and precision and often under ergonomically challenging conditions.

Planning investigations, performing data collection, signal processing and presentation of results within established protocols and with modifications for individual patients where required.

Interpreting complex ultrasound image and blood flow data and taking responsibility for reporting the results of investigations to referring clinicians.

Discussing complex information from the outcomes of investigations, and their implications for patient management, with referring clinicians including consultant medical staff.

Assessing requests for diagnostic investigations on patients in liaison with senior departmental staff and deciding on the most appropriate procedures.

Developing and updating procedures, protocols and systems of work encompassing all aspects of the clinical work of the Ultrasound Section.

Working within the stipulations of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and other associated legislation.


Person Specification


Qualifications

* First degree in physical sciences and MSc or equivalent
* Management Qualification


Experience

* Research and Development. Teaching and Training


Skills

* Effective oral and written communication. Establishing effective professional relationships
* Ability to speak Welsh


Special knowledge

* Ultrasound physics and vascular anatomy
* Policies of NHS Wales Corporate, clinical and research governance


Personal Qualities

* Strategic thinking. Decisive, determined, diplomatic. Flexible attitude to work
* Ability to cope with unpredictable situations and workload


Other

* State registered Clinical Scientist (or eligible to work towards registration)
