The Opportunity
To support the growth of the Arup Energy Business in the UKIMEA region, we are pleased to offer the opportunity for aspiring leaders to join our growing HV Networks team as Technical Lead. The role will be based in Arup’s Manchester office and integrated within a vertically aligned Energy, Water and Resources Group in the Midlands, West and Wales Sub‑region. Reporting to the HV Networks Team Lead, the Technical Lead will provide technical leadership, support business development and manage project delivery.
Key responsibilities
* Provide technical leadership and uphold high technical standards to ensure Arup remains a provider of choice.
* Support achievement of business targets for the HV Networks team and the wider Energy team.
* Maintain team motivation, promote Arup’s values, and manage and plan team resources and workload for strong utilisation.
* Act as Line Manager for team members – setting objectives, agreeing on development targets, conducting performance appraisals, and handling day‑to‑day personnel matters.
* Assume Project Manager responsibilities for Power Systems projects, ensuring successful delivery in terms of budget, schedule, and quality in full compliance with Arup Management System processes.
* Contribute to strategy and target setting in the Group Business Plan, devise an operating plan to achieve targets, and support growth of a diverse range of skills and capabilities within the team through recruitment, training and strategic recruitment.
* Travel within the UK and internationally may be required.
Required qualifications and experience
* PhD, Masters or Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering / Electrical Power Systems or a related discipline.
* Chartered Engineer status with the IET or an equivalent professional body.
* Extensive experience working within a consultancy setting.
* Demonstration of developing leadership qualities.
* Proficiency in modelling and performance of a range of steady‑state, dynamic and transient power system studies at distribution and transmission levels, using commercial power system analysis software.
* Knowledge of UK distribution and/or transmission network grid connection processes.
* Proven delivery record for power systems studies projects and client/project management in the capacity of a technical lead on project tasks.
* Extensive experience in line management/team management.
* Experience in bid (technical and commercial) preparation.
* Excellent communication skills and an established network of clients and contacts within the power sector.
