Strategic Design and Transition Programme – Strategy Policy Specialist – 32182
The Environment Agency (EA) is fully committed to having an inclusive workforce to reflect the communities we serve. We don’t just talk about diversity; we seek it, embrace it, and live it, for the benefit of our staff, our communities, and our environment.
We’re looking for an experienced Strategy and Policy Specialist to be part of a central team – the Strategic Design and Transition Programme – which will examine the recommendations of the Independent Water Commission’s report on the water sector and its regulation, and assess their implications for the future shape and design of the EA. This role involves developing a plan that ensures we continue to protect and enhance the environment while supporting sustainable growth. This is a unique opportunity to be at the forefront of shaping the future of the EA.
You will:
* Support work to provide high-quality, balanced and evidence-based advice that informs future thinking in light of the IWC report recommendations, particularly the recommendation to create a single water regulator.
* Engage with colleagues across Government, within the EA and with other regulators to ensure stakeholders are involved as we develop our thinking.
* Embrace constructive challenge and diverse thinking whilst keeping pace in a fast-moving working environment.
* Take a flexible approach and assist other projects and workstreams within the programme as the need arises.
* Act as an active member of the Programme team, contributing to a high-performing, agile, and resilient team culture, especially in the face of high demand and ambiguity.
The team is small, motivated and works directly with the Strategic Design and Transition Programme Director and Deputy Directors. The team is still forming, but a friendly welcome and an engaging, rewarding environment are expected, and personal development will be supported.
Experience / Skills Required
* Experience of working with central government to develop policy, including collaboration with specialists such as economists and scientists.
* Strategic thinking and ability to act strategically.
* Excellent communication and engagement skills, including translating complex or ambiguous issues and information into simple, targeted advice at short notice.
* Experience of working across boundaries and influencing at all levels.
Contact and Additional Information
You will be based at an EA Office; as a national role, the working location is flexible. Some travel, including occasional overnight stays, may be required.
Applications are “blind” assessed using your answers to the questions asked. Interviews will be held via MS Teams within two weeks of the closing date. The contract length is up to 12 months.
